About a month or two ago my gf bought a Fiesta from a local car dealer, with the sale came a 3month warranty.

About 2 weeks in the engine light came on and it was misfiring, so we took it in and they fixed it no problem (was the HT leads).

Just picked her car up again today as it had a similar problem except this time it was the coil pack.

Both times he has said any problems and just give them a ring and they will sort it, but within a month the warranty will have ran out.

Is there any reason why the garage would be bodging the job just to see it through the warranty period?

Hmmm, unlikely.

To be fair to them, I have a Focus and the coil pack just died on that. I replaced the HT leads as part of the fix.

Sounds to me like possibly the coil pack was on it's way and they diagnosed a HT lead issue instead.

Yeah, they might be trying to string you along to the end of the 3 months before rolling out the old 'it's out of warranty' excuse however the warranty is an additional form of protection but doesn't negate or restrict your statutory rights (the sorta rights that you have when you buy a jumper from Marks & Sparks).

IF the problems that you're experiencing are unreasonable for a vehicle of the age and mileage that your friend has purchased then you can use your statutory rights instead of the warranty coverage. Indeed, if the repair that they're attempting is proving ineffective then you could argue that they're not providing their service with 'reasonable care and skill' and consequently should offer you some form of recompense if they're unable to rectify the fault.

You could always try giving Consumer Direct a call.

Tell them to put it on diagnostics and get the code.

Lamda or coil (HT leads) I'd reckon.

Get onto them, don't pussy foot around or you'll run out of time.

Your powers of deduction are amazing. He has had the coil and leads done, as he stated.

Coil packs have been a problem on fords for the last 8 years or so, so the coil pack was probably the underlying problem. Don't be surprised if it goes again in a a year or two. Not an expensive part anyway.

This^^^^ however the fact the engine light was on would have led me straight to the coil pack in the first place and not the HT leads, faulty ht leads or spark plugs wouldn't have put the light on.

I wouldn't worry about it doesn't sound like they "bodged" anything, just used the process of elimination, starting with the easiest(and cheapest) fix first, makes sense.

You can buy a basic OBD scanner for just over £20 on eBay. It'll generally pay for itself the first time you use it. It's great to be able to walk into a garage and say "Replace fuel injector #4, my good fellow, and no skylarking."
