dunno where the best place for this one is

I've seen a few posts about this and can't see any real way to deal with the problem.

I'm 18, just passed my car test, got a VW polo 1.4CL, and i live in an okay postcode...

it comes back £3k insurance everywhere i try.
now if i could get it to a grand i'd be happy, but £3k is a bit extortionate.

My mum (who is against me even having a bike) said it would be better for me to sell my car and use the bike instead as it's a hell of a lot cheaper, and i'll still be able to use her car and my dad's car.

Anyway, want to keep my car as it'll help with moving stuff around and the like.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Go on money supermarket's car insurance part it should show you what you need to do to get every quote you can, after that if you have no joy either pay the 3k or flog the car.

Try out all the comparison sites:-

Go Compare
Confused.com
Moneysupermarket etc

When you have found the lowest quote ring around and ask other companies to beat it. You could put you parents on the policy as named drivers as this will usually lower the premium.

You could also try cashback sites such as www.topcashback.com to rake back a bit.

But £3000 for a Polo.....thats taking the ****. When I started driving 11 years ago they wanted 1200 for my 1.2 Clio and I almost had a heart attack over that!!

Your mums suggestion sounds very sensible and generous........i'd bite her finger off and save youself enough for a new bike Twisted Evil

Hi

There are various tricks to try. Adding a parent as a named driver often seems to reduce quotes for example. No doubt there are loads of similar tricks to try.

All the best

your options:

Get a sex change.

Fast forward time until you are older.

Replace the engine with a few duracel batteries and the powerplant from a handheld fan.

Earn more money and pay the £3k.

Sell the car.

Isn't that Polo group 5 insurance? Think you should be getting a car with group 1 insurance or at least nearer too.

try this

https://www.i-kube.co.uk/ikube_young_drivers_car_insurance_gps_tracker/How_ikube_Works/

my mate is 19 when he took the policy out and drives a 1.6 megane. Got his insurance down from 3k to 1.2k because of this tracker.

There are some restrictions like you can't drive the car between the hours of 11pm and 5am but it could work for you?

Try:

- take your time and check all the comparison sites, aswell as admiral etc who aren't on them
- Adding both parents to your insurance,
- working in admin instead of being a student (you might happen to get a job just before you take out insurance, then decide to become a student 10 mins later and not tell them)
- only do 4k miles a year (there's nothing to say it wont be someone else driving under their own insurance when the other 10k miles happen to appear on the car)

HTH

Ste - not bike related.

And i've looked at every insurer i can find. it's not getting any cheaper.

Adding my parents to the policy brings it down to 2.5k, and saying i'l be doing 4000 miles doesn't make a difference.

I might just wear a wig and grow some tits and say i'm female. they'll never know.

Might just sell the bloody thing and keep the bike till i'm 21... then find someone who can transfer my no claims from the bike to the car.

Anyone want a red VW polo for £500? Laughing

Not bike related so you posted it in general bike chat. Laughing

You need to phone insurance companies as well as looking at websites. You can haggle over the phone, you can't haggle with a website.

Look at all the other threads about young drivers wanting cheap(er) insurance. Thumbs Up

I did that all day yesterday, and then my parents did it when i was at work too.

No one wants to insure me on that car, though i can get insured on two different 2L TDI people carriers, both of which are a hell of a lot more powerful Laughing

's all fucked up.

Think a Ford Ka/Micra are some of the cheapest going (Group 1), look at insurance for a KA.

Wheels are wheels at the end of the day, better to be out there than not out there.

Isn't insurance fronting now illegal?
What would happen if they knew i was the only one driving it?

It's £3k TPO, it's about £3700 for fully comp

Dunc

Edit: and seeing the amount of abuse i got riding a CG125, i am NOT driving a micra/ka.

It's always been illegal, just insurance companies are far more wise to it now compared to five years ago.

You'd be completely fine with fronting until you tried to claim and at that point you would be fucked. Whichever parent did the fronting would have trouble getting insurance for themselves in the future and fronting is a criminal offense so they could find themselves in trouble with the police.

If you want cheap insurance then you need to get a car which isn't a usual choice of first car for young drivers.

As Ste said, strictly speaking fronting is illegal.

But how insurance companies prove it is another matter. I've only ever heard of one case - as lass was on Pistonheads blagging how she'd got an M3 and insured it under her parents name, then she crashed it. Someone from there dobbed her in to the insurers, they found the thread and her car didn't get paid for.

If you're not a dick about it, I can't see a way in which an insurance company would find out.

Try TPFT. Not that unusual for TPO to cost more than TPFT.

All the best

I was meaning a crash where damage and injuries are caused to third parties because those are the ones where there is potential to get in huge amounts of trouble and the bigger the claim, the more the insurance company will try to find ways out of it.
Chalky wrote:

It wouldn't take a genius to work out that the £500 polo banger belongs to the 18yr old named driver rather than the policy holder because the policy holder most likely owns (and insures) a nicer vehicle. They could knock on a neighbours doors and ask who drives the polo at house number whatever. They could look at the mileage of the polo and see that the amount of miles it's done in the last year means that it's impossible for your parent to have been commuting daily to and from their place of work.

The policy would be invalidated, the insurance company would still be obliged to pay to to third parties and they would then be wanting their money back from Dunc.

I was talking about a crash too... it wouldn't take a genious no, but there's no way it could be proved in a court of law. Could be the family's shopping car, and the lad just drives it occasionally.

Would the insurers really both asking to try and find out who drives it?

I agree with you, but I don't think it could be proved if it went all the way as such

Righto.

TPFT makes no difference, it's more expensive.

And been looking at different cars...

Thing is, we have 3 cars and i have my bike, so it's not much of an impact if i just stay insured on the 'rents cars, and use them when they're free...

Right now i just need to get to and from college and work... I don't really need a car... I can do shopping on the bike!

Parents don't want me to do the whole fronting thing, as they want me having my no claims in a few years....

I've said that i can just use the bike for a few years, then get some form of 4 wheeled tin can later on in life.

I always thought fronting was when your parents add you to their policy as a named driver when in actual fact you're the main driver?

There is nothing wrong with adding a parent to a policy with you as the main driver and them as a named driver. You still get the benefit of a drop in your insurance premium and aren't lying to the insurance company about who uses the car the most.

It is, and that's what had been suggested in this thread.
