As above I'm even more confused about my licence, as today my friend got her licence back after changing the address.
We both have the entitlement for mopeds but her's has restriction code 122 (Valid on successful completion: Basic Moped Training Course)while mine does not.
Does this mean that I could potentially ride a moped with cbt and/or L plates?

Also on my licence I have for the motorcycle entitlement A, should that not be A1 as I have a provisional driving licence. Category A1.
category A states:Motorcycles up to 25kW(33bhp) and a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW / kg. Motorcycle combination with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW / kg. A 17
Any size motorcycle with or without a sidecar.
Can I ride a 33bhp bike?

I have wondered about the motorcycle entitlement for ages.
Cheers in advance , Face.

If you passed your driving test (car) before February 2001, you have full moped entitlement and don't need to do CBT or anything else, can ride without L plates, carry a passenger etc. No motorways as anything below 50cc isn't allowed on them.

If you passed your test after February 2001, you have to get a DL196 certificate (which you get if you complete CBT) and that gives you full moped entitlement for whatever the duration of your license is (but still 2 years and L plates/no passengers/no motorways for anything bigger than 50cc). So you'll need to show your DL196 with your license if you're ever asked for it by a police officer etc.

A is correct for provisional motorcycle entitlement. A1 is basically 'light motorcycle', which is the same spec as what you can ride provisionally.

Basically, category A is divided up into A1, A2 and A, and it is only relevant when you do your test. Do the A1 test and you can only ride learner legal machines, but without the motorway/L plates/passenger restrictions. A2 means you can ride anything up to 33bhp/25kW etc. Your licence won't say A2 if you have this but will have something like >=25kW in the next column, next to 'A'. After 2 years of having A2 (or if you got A2 then became 21 years old and did an Accelerated Access test within 2 years of getting A2), you can ride anything and have full category A entitlement.

If you have only done CBT you can't ride a 33bhp machine, unless it's with a bona-fide (DSA certified etc) instructor riding with you and you have L plates, no motorways, no passengers - on your own, you can only ride a learner legal 125.

Are you confused.com? Wink

See www.direct.gov for more info, it's all there in the motoring section.
