Hi All,

Had a quick search around but not quite found what I was after.

Basically, im looking to get a GoPro HD, mainly because of what i've read and seen on here to be honest.

My main question is mounting, who here is happy with the mounts that come in the kits? Once on the bike, do you feel its vulnerable to coming off, or have you been happy with it? Have you bought other mounts?

The kit I was looking at is this one, its $300 from the US, I have family there that could order it and send it (i'd just pay them).

https://www.goprocamera.com/products/hd-motorsports-hero-camera.php#

Or alternatively, any recommendations on where to order in the UK.

My main concern is the mount, film/audio quality all seems pretty good for what im after.

I have the helmet hero, the 3M sticky pads that come with it are incredible ... you are more likely to snap the plastic clip or camera casing than remove the 3M sticky pad itself once it is on ... (as proven by a mate who clouted his camera on a overhead branch).

And that is on a shiny lid surface too (prepped with Meths to make sure oil and dirt free before sticking).

As a word of warning, make sure you know EXACTLY where you plan to mount the sticky pad as once it touches (even lightly - you don't get to adjust) it is there to stay ...

Seriously, it is hard to believe I know, but once you have stuck one of those pads on a clean surface, it isn't coming off, worry about something else!! Wink

Good stuff to hear, thanks!

Have you ever mounted it on your bike? Just wondered how you'd get the mount off your bike (without taking paint!), or is the suction cup good enough for that as well?

No, just my lid - I put the 3M pad on there with a view to it staying on there, never removing - I think you will need solvent to get it off to be honest - might be worth emailing go-pro about safe removal if that is a concern?

The helmet hero I have (came with more useful mounts for the sort of stuff I do, so I went for that, not motorsports) doesn't come with the suction cup mount, so can't vouch for that from personal experience (have read it is good though).

I haven't directly smacked the camera/3M pad in an off yet, but as you can see here ... if it survived these 'lay-downs' its not likely to come off in normal riding!! Wink

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SazGC0JL1Og&t=0m54s&fmt=22

The second one was enough force to break my collar bone and snap the peak mount off, but not enough to even move the angle of the go-pro, let alone it fling off!! Cool

Basically found what BlueSV said, as soon as the sticky pad touched the helmet it wasn't coming off, I gave it a tug and thought it was more likely the sidepod would break off than it would unstick, have also lost the front under braking at 20-30 and dropped right onto the camera, just ground a littlebit off the black plastic screw handle, stayed stuck and survived fine although did knock the sd card out(fvck)

Due to the strength of the 3m pads, i just use the suction pad!! Shocked

It wasn't on as much as I'd like when i once went for a ride and it was perfectly fine. Tbh as long as there is a proper seal, i very much doubt it would come off!

Pretty sure you can still speak to N30 or email his guy and buy it for £200..

And the suction cup is awesome. You're more likely to rip the fairings off/break the plastic bits. I remember a thread on a different forum where a guy attached the suction cup to a glass door (whatever they're called) and stuck a 5L bottle (or more) on it and it didn't give. Considering the camera itself weighs like a a few hundred grams max....

I got the 3M tape on my spare helmet and the suction cup to go on the bike. You do have to find good places to put it on though. If you put it on a place that it vibrates you generally want to set the recording volume to "lo" else it creates quite a bit of white noise.

Obviously it's better to attach it to a non-vibrating point. I find the tanks are awesome for it, but can get in the way of you leaning down... Fairings are good, but not so good for naked bikes Laughing

BTW, I have the normal gopro, not the HD Crying or Very sad (will do soon! Very Happy)

Cool, thanks for the posts all.

By the sound of it, it looks better to use the suction pad for the bike and the 3M pads on a spare lid?

Although to be honest, it sounds like it'd be difficult to loose the camera.

I had a look at this review, and the guy seems to be getting a decent move on a blackbird 1100 over the IOM without it all going wrong. (and thats with the suction mount).

https://bikerholic.com/2010/06/21/review-gopro-hd-hero-onboard-video-camera/

Think i'll go for one, now its where i get one.

I know people in the US that would buy one and send it over to me, its $300 on the web over there, might find it a bit cheaper if i look around but its still only £195 anyway!

Then getting it over here being a little extra..

Anyone know of anywhere i can get one in the UK for similar sort of money or am i best just going for the US option?

Pretty sure the guy N30 uses, delivered to your door (rather than family) does it for around 200 quid all in... And no custom charges, least I haven't heard of any. Find the thread or PM n30

Cheers for that, will drop a message across to him, would get to me much quicker and avoid the potential hassle of customs!

This is the guy N30 recomended and the guy I bought my GoPro from. Ask if he could send it to you as a cheap electrical gift and you might not get taxed, I didn't Very Happy

I paid for the more expensive shipping and it cost me £210 all in delivered to my door. I ordered it Friday night and got it Tuesday morning from the US!

Had no problems, was about £200 delivered, came in about 2 weeks, ordered this card for it, so can record on any setting pretty much until the battery is flat, ie 2.5 hours Very Happy

I guess one could always attach a teather for peace of mind if using the suction mount?

I bought mine from the uk in the end to prevent faffing. they are £300 in the uk, but if you shop about, you will find one that will include a 16gd sd card for that.

personally I figured after paying import and delivery duty, coupled with the hassle if it arrives broken, it wasn't worth the difference over the uk+card deal.

if you are lucky then the one from the us will turn up ok and you won't hit the charges, I just knew sods law means I'd have hit both Very Happy

These guys do it for $299, but they also give you a FREE Kingston 32GB SD Card (Not cheap!!) I ordered an exhaust from them, very helpful and quick delivery times.

If you want to know more, ring them and speak to Brad, as the deal isn't on the website. He owns the shop, and is always happy to help!

I've had mine about 2 months and the camera casing broke. Was attached to a tripod and not overtightened. But GoPro have sent me a new casing for free under warranty.
