If you buy a bike at the weekend that has no tax is it impossible to get tax? Post offices are closed, and you can't apply online because the v5 won't have the correct address (yours) on it so you're not eligible to apply online? Is there any way round this save taking the chance you won't get caught?

Seems ridiculous! If you travel a few hours to pick the bike up you don't want to have to do it again!

I wouldn't worry about it, just show them that you've just bought the bike and are taking it home.

You will still get a fine if you ride it with no tax. You can't use the excuse 'I just bought the bike'. That doesn't fly with the police, they will just tell you that you should have picked the bike up in a van or waited until the week to tax the bike. I've picked up car's with no tax, and driven them home, but I realise the risk's, if I get caught I will end up with a fine and maybe even the car getting towed, but its your own risk!

Just get a receipt from the garage or previous owner, so that you can prove you've only just bought it and you're taking it straight home

I've just found out that some post offices are open on saturdays normal opening hours, so I should be able to do it that way shouldn't I if I were to go buy one tomorrow...

If you can show the receipt and V5 slip etc you should be ok. Just tell them you can't tax it until you've got the documents etc. I'd have thought road tax was more of an issue for the DVLA than the police in any case.

Legally you can't ride a bike on the road without tax (unless its on trade plates), doesn't matter if you have just bought it. The police will contact the DVLA, and the DVLA have the choice if they want, to tow the vehicle away, or fine the person riding the bike. Of course, they would have to be complete twat's to do this when you are only riding the bike home, and have to option to tax it, but they CAN still do you for no tax.

Theroetically they could do you for no tax, if you pushed the bike on to the road without even riding it, both wheels have to be more then 6 inches off the ground to take it on a public highway with no tax. I know this, because I got a fine for no tax when towing an untaxed car with an A-Frame. I was only towing the car from an auction house to my house, then it was going in the garage, but as the back wheels were on the floor, they said it had to be taxed, I got an £80 fine from the DVLA.

Pay a bit extra and get the previous owner to tax it before you pick it up?

Seems the most logical way round it for me anyhow.

Cheers,
Steve

But if its not insured they can't do that. You'd need to have all your insurance documents printed out as well to get the tax in the post office, and not all of them send you the certificate online - and you'd have to print it out at the other persons house unless you have taken the insurance out before seeing it...

Ouch. What area and did you go through a tax-trap?

In my experience, you're unlucky/unlikely to get done, especially if you're sensible and avoid any known tax traps etc.

Ah yeah, fair play then.

But for the sake of getting caught and being fined etc...

If the bike was to be ridden anyway, then me being me, I'd probably get the insurance and everything sorted beforehand.

You can't ride away with no insurance, likewise no tax, so why risk getting caught for not having tax, when you also have no insurance??

Or am I misreading something somewhere?

Cheers.

You can easily get the insurance over the phone when you've checked out the bike and are happy you want to buy it.
You can't then get a displayable (remember it has to be displayed correctly) tax disc instantly.

Can the post office not write on a tax disc* and sort one out there and then providing you can produce valid MoT and insurance certificates?

I was under the impression they could.

Man I'm so naive it's unbelievable.

*just looked at my old man's new disc and noticed the writing is printed, are the days of handwriting on discs long gone or??

How do you get a valid insurance certificate on the spot?
Tax discs are hand written, but the post offices tend to be very iffy about home-printed insurance certificates, so even if you can print it there and then, it may not do you any use.
And this is of course presuming the person selling to you is selling when post offices are open - most people are working for most of the times post offices are open.

I meant waiting for the insurance doc's to come through the post etc, etc.

Alright look fair enough, you bloody win! Laughing

I know now a bit more than I did an hour ago, and for this, I thank you

You could make an insurance certificate on your computer and use it to buy tax at the nearest post office to the seller that's open on Saturdays. Shifty

If you've got recovery that covers you on any vehicle then you could use that to get home, all you have to do is say you've lost the keys. If the seller is still insured on the bike then you could get them to tax it for you.

Recovery often checks your tax disc these days, so that may not work!

Downloaded docs are perfectly acceptable. A PO clerk who doesn't accept it is wrong!

Of course by presenting false docs, you're in a whole world different world of fun...

Anyway, I'd ask the seller to tax it on my behalf, assuming they've still got it insured. Heck, email the insurance certificate to them if they've not!

Call recovery saying that you've lost the keys and that someone has stolen your tax disc? Razz

Utter twats!
A blatant example of the law being used far beyond where its needed purely for revenue creation...This country.

I don`t know if it is still the case but if it isn`t taxed then the insurance is void as well as it should not be on a public highway, found this out the hard way when i had a car stolen that had no tax,Was parked out on the road, showed the traffic officers my docs and they done me with no insurance,C***s.
