When we get a ticket we usually pay it, the problem is that we don't know the law and for the sake of £80/£120 fine - we don't get a lawyer to fight for such a low fine.

Motorbikes cannot display a pay and display ticket. Well, of course they can but there are issues on where to put it (not every bike as a wind screen), if it will stick and it will not fly away with wind or rain. Westminster have decided to charge parking by phone and credit card (I haven't got a phone or a credit card - but that would be another topic).

I found this - it is a beginning - but it is not an answer.

https://www.dft.gov.uk/adobepdf/165240/244921/244924/TAL2-02.pdf

Most Councils will therefore allow to park a motorbike on parking bays and residents bays - but that applies to MOST councils - NOT ALL OF THEM.

One will need to look up rules and regulations for each of the 350+ Council of England (alone). Somewhat this doesn't sound right, to begin with.

And this is where - I would think - the law should not be allowed to be such an ass.

The law often follows common sense and rules are laid down. These maybe even rules that were applicable 40 years ago but no changes have been made. If displaying a ticket becomes a problem, the problem surely doesn't go away just because Council A or T will state that a ticket must be purchased and displayed. Are we all going to chase tickets blown away? Some Councils (Birmingham) have taken "positive" actions to charge motorbikes to park on pay and display.

I NEED YOUR HELP - PLEASE?

Ruling by Councils that demand that motorbikes must display a valid ticket must be unlawful. I am certain of this; the issue and point is to find the act which will be in our favour.

Excellent post which has prompted me to email my local authority asking what plans(if any), they have with regards to the provision of dedicated solo motorcycle and scooter parking.

Or you could look at the signs. Bikes aren't exempt from parking regulations, regardless of people's feelings on the subject. Unless you know otherwise, assume that resident bays are just that.

In other news, Kensington & Chelsea's signage is currently non-compliant, so feel free to use their resident bays until they get round to fixing it!

Oh god, not more parking ticket talk.

It's boring. It's utterly boring. It's so boring, I want to stab myself in the eyes for having the misfortune of clicking on this thread in the naive thought that it might be something I'd want to read.

Parking? I mean, seriously: Are there people who really care about it that much?

Who the fuck are you people who need to park your bikes in public all the time? Shops have private car parks. Pubs have private car parks. Work places have private car parks. Theme parks have car parks. Music festivals have car parks. Even fucking bus stations have car parks. All of which are invariably free for bikes. Your house, presumably, has somewhere large enough to stick your bike, if not a garage or shed. Just where the fuck do you go, apparently all the time, where none of these are available, and why?

I ride my bike pretty much every day of the year, and I probably have to 'park' it on public land a handful of times every year, usually for about 10 minutes. And I hardly live in the sticks.

Your post has not prompted me to e-mail my local authority

And if you expect a response to an e-mail from your local Council, think again. You've got more chance of finding Angela Jolie having a quiet pint in your local. Good luck with that Thumbs Up

Actually that seems to be changing. Parking used to be free for bikes at Croydon's Fairfields car park. Since a little ago they started charging 3 pounds per day which you have to pay using the phone and credit card method mentioned in the OP. It would just make sense for most car parks to follow suit, I mean it is more money for them.

Well !!! soon or later we will all have to pay for parking motorbikes - while it is free, we might as well "enjoy it".

Birmingham have introduced boxes for Pay and Display tickets.... What a lovely idea.

And I really love it to stand under the rain on my mobile while waiting for those nice people at Westminster to answer the telephone so that I can give them my credit card details to pay for parking.

Ajag - you are a lucky c***.

Most garages charge for parking motorbikes and so do hospitals and some shopping centres too.

Boring subject - perhaps - until it happens to you and you will just have to pay the £80 fine.

It is not about the fine - it is about liberties. Not every biker is 26 year old with full leather gear, the latest 999cc bike and zooming across UK on a daily basis.

Those "poor sods" that need the bike to go to work in Westminster (and there must be a few thousands) must now pay an extra £150 per annum for the benefit to use the motorbike. Somehow, it seems, that the British like punishment - the more the merrier - and, by the way; keep it all quiet.

At least I went to the demonstrations against Westminster while the local bikers were all riding home.

Part of the problem is that Councils are really taking the piss - the other part is that more and more they are just controlling us.

But that only happens if you park illegally - don't park where you shouldn't and you won't get the fine! How hard is that to understand?!

Mistakes are made by everyone. The fact remains that motorbikes - in most Councils, can park on residents bays; full stop.

Why should we read all 350+ Councils objectives in England - is another issue.

I am not a criminal - but it actually the other way around - The Councils are the criminal.

As you are all so good - perhaps you should sign up a petition so that motorbikes should also pay for the Congestion Charge in London.

I am really shocked by the stance taken by many. Governments pushed the public the buy more bicycles and motorcycles because they are better for traffic and the environment - So they told us.

London residents know very well that there is nowhere to park a bicycle in central London. As the local Councils are now making money on the "ride a bicycle" scheme - thousands of parking spaces have been created to accommodate these new bicycles. How come that to date there has been no money to do it?

Today I saw 5 brand new black Jaguar cars and one Range Rover with signs on them for the 2012 London Games. I am paying for it - I didn't ask to - but I am and will also pay for the Olympic games up to 2020 (assuming that this tax will be taken away).

Westminster is charging for motorcycle parking and so it seems that another town in the North of England has started doing the same.

At this rate, by 2012 - we will all have to pay for parking or we will need to pay, yet, for another tax.

Meter parking in central London can be as much as £6 per hour - and rising. It is just another tax.

I am not complaining for getting a parking ticket, I am complaining about policies that are different from one Council to the other and they are all there, basically, to screw everyone.

If you like to bend-over; be my guest.

If you get a parking ticket appeal, with facts and in a pleasant manner.
If you are right........... no fine and all is well.
If you are in the wrong.............. same fine...... easy.

Thats what I did and the fine was dropped. All it took was 5 mins of my time and a nice little email. Jobs a good un.

My interest in parking regulations stems from the fact that my machine is, apart from public transport, my sole means of getting around. I travel to work on it and run sundry fetch and carry trips at other times.

I was a little surprised at the rudeness of a number of contributors in response to the original post, if it's so boring why bother getting involved at all, especially with all the profanity?

As an aside, my email was replied to today, with exactly the information I requested which included the location of several free, dedicated motorcycle parking bays.[/u]

I am giving up on this Forum. It seems that here there are those sort of bikers that give a bad name to the industry. No wonder MPs mention: mindless hooligans, ignorant, with no respect for society.

I feel sorry for Not to bike parking tax, that for over 2 years with rain and snow have been campaigning to get the Westminster illegal tax removed.

WITH THIS SORT OF ATTITUDE - WHO NEED ENEMIES!!!!!

Chat rooms and blogs have become safe havens for those who spew hate and discord. Many of these same people would probably run from their own shadow if they ventured out into the real world; so keep that in mind when you are tempted to respond angrily when you read their venom. You will be a better person for it.

Good manners and civility should be as much a part of an individual as breathing and just because there's the anonymity of the internet, individuals should not act any differently than if they were having face-to-face chats. If anyone is wondering why society has become so rude, the question becomes "what role am I playing to exacerbate or ameliorate the problem?" Individual actions cause collective results.

Some discourteous people will blame stress for causing them to misbehave, do not accept that excuse. If people live their lives in accordance with prescribed standards of conduct, it will cause them to prevail and act appropriately each time adversity or rude folks confront them. Good behavior should not be situational.

Presumably that's aimed at me.

Rest assured, my response in person would be little different when confronted with such tedious, moronic, relentless propaganda, devoid of reason or proper justification, or indeed any value or interest to the vast majority of forum members.

This is a discussion board. Expect debate. And when you can't engage in that debate in a constructive manner (for example, explain why a parking fee is somehow a 'tax'), expect to be told to fuck off.

And if you believe that I'm a prime example of somebody who 'spews hate and discord' from the anonymous safety of my computer, then I'd suggest that you take a look at my profile and post history, and see that I am, in fact, rarely rude.

I'm not stressed. I just do not have time now, nor ever have had time, for people who preach and spam endlessly and nonsensically in order to further pointless, moronic causes. I'd tell you to fuck off for exactly the same kinds of reasons that I'd tell religious zealots to fuck off.

Dear Alex,
I am sure I read somewhere that should someone not be interested in the topic, they are not obliged to respond.
It is obvious that my concern for fairness across the parking fines/community does not concern many in this forum. We each believe in different standards, topics, issues and have different priorities to our concerns.
I have been riding a motorbike for the last 43 years. In those days, a helmet was not compulsory. It is probably difficult for people like me to accept changes, remembering how good it used to be.
Westminster parking - Yes, I would call it a tax – but not because the article below says so. I also call the £35 p.a. that we pay towards the 2012 Olympic games – a tax. Why should only Londoners pay for it? What are the benefits? (apart from Lord Coen making £500k per annum). We don’t get tickets at a special rate or any other benefits but we will pay for it for the next 12 years too. In fact, for a few Londoners, it will be a right pain in the ass.
“”Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, Leader of the Labour Group at Westminster City Council, has today announced that the Conservative motorcycle parking tax is actually costing the taxpayer £430,000 in the financial year 2009/10. So, this tax, which was introduced by Conservative Councillor Danny Chalkley in August 2008, is actually loss-making and costing the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds sterling per annum.””

It's politics and Labour are in opposition. They would use inflammatory language to further their support and to annoy the government.

Show me where the words 'motorcycle parking tax' appear in either the City of London budget documents, or in Conservative policy statements.

Ironically, if it is actually losing money, then it is a collective financial burden on constituents (i.e. tax payers) and it is therefore, indirectly, a tax. If it breaks even, or makes revenue after costs, then it is not a tax. It is reduces the collective burden for the provision of an individual service, and reduces the overall tax burden on individuals.

Even if you (wrongly) consider it a tax, it seems strange to me that people would choose to campaign against a form of taxation levied to fund a service that you, as an individual, actually use and benefit from, instead of campaigning against a form of taxation that you're charged but never redeem, or don't support. For example, it seems far more reasonable to protest against your income tax paying towards a war campaign in Iraq. Or to protest against your NI contributions funding benefits that you'll personally never redeem. That's the kind of tax that pisses me off.

It is a long list of suppressing the masses. NI will go towards your pension but it does also pay for illness and unemployment and other benefits.

I agree with you about IRAQ and I should know something about it having had my son serving in Afghanistan.

Time is limited these days because we are given many tasks by society so that we can keep occupied.

I do what I can to help others and some causes – obviously, some dear to me than others.

Gwynedd county council (that the same bunch of a***holes that form a partnership with the speed camera vans in North Wales, ask that you buy a ticket and put it in your pocket. So what are they going to do.....hang around your bike and wait for you to come back! Second thoughts forget I said that, they probably would!

although i am totally against paying for parking on a motorbike, i did have this idea.
make some bike parking bays with a chain on them. similar to what Tesco's and Sainsbury's have on there trolleys. you put in, say a pound/press button for a ticket. which releases a chain that you can use to chain up your bike. if there were facilities like this that actually provided a secure place to park your bike then i suppose i wouldn't mind paying for parking. however they do not. therefore i will not be paying for parking.
