Righto, I wear contacts most of the time. I do have glasses but prefer contacts, especially on the bike. I was supposed to get a delivery today but they fucked up (gave me a normal left contacts box rather than toric (for astigmatism) and I used my last pair last night...

However, I took the last pair out and put them back in the solution and container they came in so they were fresh, etc... And tried them today and were spot on perfect... They're daily contacts BTW.

Is it really bad doing this? No point asking at the opticians because they will say "dailys are dailys".... So would like to hear from some randomer who does know more than your average person! Razz

If I was to get the container for weeklies/monthlies and the same solution and fill it up would it be ok? Or use the solution they come in? (difference in solution used between normal and toric lenses?

Say to use them twice rather than once? Contacts ain't cheap, especially not with having astigmatism Sad

Safe to do so or not?

Ta.

Depends on protein build up mate.

Better to just get monthlies/fortnightlies in future, which you then change roughly when they start to get itchy/blurry.

Which in the UK is usually a week longer then expected, and outside (in dusty sunny countries) a week less.

As for current problem. You can buy solution and cases over the counter from the optician.

Not only that, I'd wager your eyes aren't that bad, so you may be able to get away with just one contact. I'm blind as a bat, but can do most things (except read books) with only one contact in. Just a thought.

I've got gas permeable lenses (and a stigwossname). The lenses I'm wearing at the moment are probably about 6 years old, I find them more comfortable than my newer lenses. In the past my optician has been happy for me to wear lenses as long as 8 years before saying it was time for a replacement pair. (Been wearing contacts on the bike since 1987)

God, you still use the horrible expensive midget things?

My dad used to swear by them, now he's switched to soft he's so much happier. And if you lose one (which is fucking rare) it's no issue.

I'd say you'd be OK personally. As far as I'm aware the solution is the same for Dailies/Monthlies/torics etc so that shouldn't matter.

I wouldn't try wearing a daily lens for a week or a month even with nightly soaking as I would imagine after a while they would become brittle and fall apart because of all the handling.

Erm I work in an opticians and you can wear them a lot longer than they say. However they will degrade faster and it always safer to use them accordingly. Crap can build up and it may be blurry anyway.

Fair.

I am aiming to get weeklies/monthlies. Was just queering on the dailies. Razz

I can see, drive/ride without the but things are quite blurry... I prefer being able to see clearly and see those small things that may affect a bikes handling Razz Cheers anyways.

I wouldn't use them a long time. Just maybe 2-3 days rather than just 1 day...

I'd be more worried about them falling apart from frequent handling. As long as your careful and clean them they should be OK for a while.

I've done this, and after a few uses, they do break up as they are just designed for a single use, so are more flimsy.

Trying to get half or quarter of a broken contact lense out is a real pain. One time I just couldn't get it out, so had to have it floating around for a few days before it came out of it's own accord.

When you get protein build up, things will get slighly blurry, and the contact lense willy have a sort of milky smear on them. You can get protein remove tables, but they probably cost about the same as a contact lense.

A better alternative, would be an ultrasonic cleaner. I'm pretty sure this would shake off the protein, but this would mean washing it in tap water, which wont be exactly clean. I guess you could boil it first and then let it cool down.

I'd suggest putting the contact lenses in the fridge after you take them out to go to sleep, as this will keep down the bacterial growth.

It also feels nice in the morning putting in a cold contact lense, and I think it makes the lense a bit more rigid when its cold, so its easier to put in.

I got an irritating eye infection from reusing contact lenses, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are really broke, and really dislike contact lenses.

Yes contacts can last a lot longer if you have good solution. Dailies are generally thinner and a different type of material which is why they degrade faster.

Ofcourse this is not what we can advise, not just on the money side but legally. Contacts can cause infections if not used correctly you see.

Thanks for the info people Thumbs Up

I wore one set for 3 days (I am now broke pretty much, but for good reason, to be on 2 wheels again!) and they were fine. They actually felt more comfortable today and yesterday than the first day Shocked though they stung a bit to begin with for about 30 seconds but they seemed to settle.

Have thrown them out now as I think 3 days is good enough. Thumbs Up

Just thought I'd update...

I've used 2 pairs of dailies for 2 weeks. 1 pair for one week. And they've been perfect... and more comfortable than new ones. No blurryness, no itchyness, no redness or anything. No breaking either...

My eyes are fine, if not better than before too. (comfort, red eyes, etc) Also seem to be able to wear them for longer.

I'm not a good example, as I have eyes of steel, but I've used contacts every day for the past 8 or 9 years. I use monthlies for over 3 months, sometimes stretching to half a year, and I sleep with them too. I can go months without ever removing them. Can you use a daily 2 days in a row? Hell yeah, you can use it for a week if you clean it (which I wouldn't) and make sure not to break it.

You can do it, and 99% of the time you won't have an issue, the other 1% you'll go blind. Not a risk I'd want to take.

I wear Monthly extended wear ones (so designed to be slept in) which cost £11.50/month.

Contacts aren't expensive, and it's not worth taking the chance on your sight.

I've bought them for him indoors off vision direct and eurolens, for Acuvue Advance, cost about 50-60 quid and usually last him a year. He used to pay about £25 per month.

It is if you have astigmatism. Even with direct debit scheme the cheapest option for me is just under 40 per month... That is dailies however. Still, monthlies cost around 20 or so. If I buy a month supply of dailies that's 30 weeks, with my current one pair for one week. So 80 for 4 weeks over a year... That I can live with.
