I mean 'by' my wife .... sorry:

Anyway, she always alluded to the fact that she could draw better than me ... and finally after 14 yrs I bit and said "come on then, lets have a draw off".
(we live a pretty boring life and this is about as good as it gets at my age).
Anyway, a couple of hours later and my picasso -esque portrait of the cat, which made him look like a bear with mange ... failed to beat Mrs Silkys offering.

I am fully aware that people (me) are often skewed when judging familys work/looks etc ... so i am bound to say "thats great" ... but I have looked at it again and think its amazing.

Now the main thrust of my point is: She earns fu*k all playing with her horses, the lazy cow .... so could she make money selling this stuff ?
Would you buy it ?

Not traced .... but copied from a photo of her horse.
In acrylics.

I wouldn't buy any artwork, but I do agree that it's a bloody good painting.

When do we get to see the picture of the cat? Laughing

That is really impressive. I wouldn't buy it personally because im not really into art, but I reckon it's definetly good enough to sell.

I personally wouldn't, but that is fucking amazing and I know my girlfriend would love a decent original painting of a horse as she too is a horse fiend.

There's websites she can sell prints of her paintings as well, such as zazzle (Sarah has bought a print of a killer whale, 2 unicorn prints and something else I think that are hung in our house but I don't take notice of). Not exactly enough to quit work on, but a nice little earner on the side.
Maybe freelance as well for (for example) the front covers of novels.

She definately has talent as an artist, and not the "oh my you've put a croissant on a toilet, how contemporary. Gold star for you." kind of talent.

Firstly - I cheerfully admit I can't paint, draw, sketch or even colour inside the lines too well, on a relative scale she's light years ahead of my best efforts.

That aside, I seriously doubt I'd pay for her work (yet, she may well improve). The proportions are out of kilter, there's no feeling of depth and the lines just don't 'feel' right on the eye. Bear in mind all criticism is subjective, it may be my eye that's out and not her brushwork but it simply doesn't sit right to me. I do spend quite a bit of time trawling antique shops and small galleries and in truth would be surprised to see it hung.

Best of luck though, there's definitely some talent there, just put some polish on it Thumbs Up

Is it painted from a photo? If so, could I see the photo?

There's a lot of demand for paintings of pets where the artist really captures the likeness of the animal.

I really like the overall painting.

You can cheat massively by painting over a photo output onto a canvas thing.

It doesn't matter wether or not we would pay for it, the point is that someone definitely would. If she does a few see if she could put them up as for sale in a local pub or arts centre. I've seen much much worse than that sell for a decent amount of cash.

I have NO artistic talent whatsoever, of any sort.

But in the art I want to see, and more especially to purchase, I want to see originality.

Your wife's effort is a good enough rendition, and she certainly has more skill than I have, by every stretch of the imagination. I wish I had even half her ability.

But it doesn't draw me in. And as soon as I know that the picture was "copied" from a photo, that's enough for me to become disinterested, and to confirm my opinion that it feels lifeless.

An artist's opinion of a view/object/display might not be the same as another artist's, and that's what I am interested in seeing: why each artist has envisioned what they have produced, what passion has caused them to think of it.

I just can't find merit in what basically to me is "copying". I want to feel the passion that drives your wife's desire to produce art, not a copy of a photo.

I want art that makes me question what it is, or become interested in what caused it to be produced.

Sorry if this sounds critical (especially by someone with no talent whatsoever, LOL) ... it just doesn't "grab" me, which is what it has to do, in order for me to shell out the readies for artwork that does appeal to me.

Me too.

I once nearly shelled out £180 for a canvas filled with Stanley knife blades, the only thing that stopped me was that I couldn't have hung it in the living room cos everybody smoked in there and it would have spoiled the artwork.

And there would be no point hanging it in my bedroom, where hardly anybody would see it.

I'm currently investigating decent "erotic" art for my bedroom walls, now that Anita has finally moved out Laughing

Buy a massive TV screen, plug a computer into it, and set it to browse xnxx.com all day.

Sorted.

Meh, it's 'ok'. I wouldn't class it as art tho - it's just a picture of another picture - there's no real creation at play, nor any sophistication.

Non sophisticed people may want to buy it, but non sophisiticated people don't generally have very much cash. So the per hour invome will probably be worse than her doing a shift at Maccy Ds.

Oh dear.

Porn => meaty, blatant, obvious, continuous, appeals to men
Erotic => subtle, arty-farty ... but still horny, appeals to women and pooves

Hey,

I'm a graphics designer by trade and run the marketing dept for a union so employ several freelancers and artists on a regular basis so feel in a vaguely decent position to comment here...

Your wife clearly has a talent.

What she has painted, whilst not original in concept is clearly well carried out in pratice. Painting animals from photos is a bit of a cliche these days but there are both plenty of people who are willing to pay for a painting of their pooch and plenty of people willing to paint it.

I would ask how long that peice took her? If she could rustle it up in a few hours and charge sub £50 then thats a good bread and butter. If she took several days slaving over it then i would say shes unlikelly to earn a decent amount of cash for her time.

The peice does have a certain niavity about it and i think if she painted on a regular basis she could quite easily become very good. If shes really into horses then following some of the guides on deviantart (www.deviantart.com) could help here.

To make decent money in the art world at present you need to be an "out the box" thinker and, as mentioned above, paint some pretty wacky stuff, make dresses from meat, put bibles on beds...that sort of thing. However theres always a pretty good bread and butter to make.

Some people here have said that "copying" a photo is not art - tosh. Every good artist learns and to learn you must draw what you see - without sitting in a field drawing the horse she would need a photo!

Conceptual art and tradional art are two very different beasts but both hold their own!

If you or she would like any further (rather crap i admit) advice then feel free to message me. Smile
