I had my first tankslapper last night on the way home from work. Scared the shit out of me.

What happened was..... Riding along at 30mph last night heading home from work just after midnight I hit something with the front wheel. As it was dark I couldnt see it creep up in front of me. One minute I'm happily bobbing along and the next I feel a bump and the handlebars are flapping around from side to side. For one scary moment I thought that was it, I'm off this bike! But luckily the bike righted and I pulled over to the side of the road to see if any damage had been done to the front wheel. Luckily enough all was fine. I was tempted to go back the 100 meters to find the offending thing I had ran over but my nerves were shattered so I got on the bike instead and came home.

My first tankslapper and I lived. Shocked Laughing

Does the gixxer have a steering damper fitted?

Well done on surviving the first of many tank slappers Wink

glad your ok mate, sounds more like a head shake rather then a full tank slap as the chances of staying on board from a full tank slap are slim

No steering damper pax. Although I have considered one in the past with her.

Head shake or tank slapper it fkin scared the life out of me. But no harm done and I'll get out today in the light to double check the front wheel. Thumbs Up

As said its very wise to get a steering damper.

I had the R1 which would tank slap if you so much as looked at the throttle when exiting a corner. scared the shit out of me the first time.

She once got me when i clipped a cats eye exiting a bend sending me into the mother of all tank slaps. The only reason she didnt go down is as the right bar went out the throttle yanked open lifting the front recovering the bike. Pulled over and some guy who had been following pulled next to me and said That was an awesome recovery how did you know what to do so fast....... my reply its just experience.

In truth it was just dumb luck and i was scared shitless Bought a damper after that. Laughing

Sounds like you had two good recoveries, one with the tank slapper and one with the reply Laughing

I was fine on the bike today but I must confess to riding that little bit more gingerly through the same part of town...... just in case!

I landed a fast wheelie with a cocked wheel and it sent me into a massive tank slapper, i just kept calm and somehow yanked the throttle back open. Staying loose on the bike helped too. I did shit myself though, i wasnt wearing any gear haha.

I nearly came off my GSX 1100 last week when the front started to oscillate like that, I plan to get a damper for the blade as soon as I get it home.

What causes tankslappers? I know landing a wheelie crooked does it, but what else? I guess hitting something (in pink floyds case) unbalanced wheels?

Im getting scared, they don't just happen out of nowhere do they? Sorry for being a n00b Embarassed

The rake of the forks is or used to be the main cause and I think the brough superior they offset the wheel mount forward on the forks to eliminate the problem, Im sure if it was another bike I will be corrected but fork angle of rake then a whole series of other things can cause it like poor design, badly balanced bike, twisted forks, twisted frame, no oil in forks, swingarm, tyres ect ect, dont worry about it too much since any bike your thinking of buying you can do a lot of reading reviews and even typing in the bike and tank slapper and see if anything comes up, enjoy riding and good luck Thumbs Up Smile

As stated, mine was caused by hitting something with the front wheel (or some midget). Most are caused these days by the front wheel losing traction during acceleration and then regaining traction slightly off ballance causing the wheel bounce. The end result is the tank slapper.

The forks swing from left to right at a resonant frequency, self supporting them smacking from left to right. Can be triggered from badly landing a wheelie or hitting something, but almost always if that happens it will just be a quick lock to lock slap and won't continue as a tank slapper. Needs to be the right combination of speeds for that bike (and how bendy the frames and forks are).

All the best

Keith
