Posted: 21:18 - 19 Sep 2010 Post subject: Yet another CBT tale... |
 |
|
Well I'll start off by saying I'm profoundly deaf and I use hearing aids [which only amplify what I don't want to hear!] ..this may be odd to other people, but I wasn't brought up to sign...I'd never touched a bike in my life, however I gained a car licence a few months ago..
I decided to do my CBT last monday for a 'challenge', something new to learn and experience...Here was me thinking it'd be straightfoward, be over in a day but it wasn't! End of monday morning, they told me to return next day. I could not ride in a straight line whilst this other 'learner', was zipping about all over the bloody yard! Cue my feeling ashamed mode!
I had taken off my hearing aids, believing it'd only cause feedback with the helmet on but that meant I could not hear the engine noises change when going through gears, throttle etc..and of course I had to lipread the instructor, which is a challenge for me to do with new people..
So came the next day, and feeling a little embarassed as well as frustrated and desperate, I tried turning my hearing aids waaaay down and popped on the helmet...no feedback!..I could hear the engine noises and almost hear the instructor talking, which with lipreading meant I could understand better..progress then started!
On the 4th morning I rode out, yet into another pissing it down and windy day...because I couldnt use the radio comms, they put a rider in front of me to follow and copy, with one behind me watching. This might be seen as piss easy but there was a few moments when I felt utterly alone when cars cut in or waiting at junction etc..but I got through it! [with a slight wheel lock 'buggerme!' moment, which i just about corrected in time!]
I was soaking wet and cold, with sore ears from the helmet lining pressing on my hearing aids but I still had a big grin for the rest of today after being handed the certificate! As dangerous and rainy as it was out there, I enjoyed the ride immensely and I definitely have the biking bug!
Now to set my eyes on DAS... |
