How much do used motorcycle prices actually drop over winter? Is it a lot or is it more of a myth? When is the cheapest month to buy a bike, November/December approaching christmas when it's cold and people need cash? I'm new to biking and I'm interested to hear from people who've seen if the prices do actually drop over winter and by how much.

Depends on the bike. Don't think there is much change in the cheaper end (sub 1K) of the market tbh.

I'd agree with the 10% shout. I'm always looking through auto trader / piston heads / ebay etc to see how much bikes I'm interested in are going for. Usually see about £300 increase / decrease in summer / winter.

They don't.

After i bought mine towards the end of summer last year, the same models actually went up. It is a myth that prices drop.

Theres a definite drop its no myth. In fact ive steadily watched the prices drop from when I started looking in May/June to now, right across the range of sportsbikes anyway. Not much of a drop on the sub 2k stuff obviously.

I think prices don't drop as much as the availability of bargains increases.

Some people off-load their bikes after the sun goes away, or perhaps see it as a chance to gain back the money they over-spent on their summer holidays. I've also seen some terriffic bargains in late november/early december where some folk have sold the bike in order to fund Chrismas.

There were cheaper bikes around last winter than in the summer definitely.
However, due to the 'credit crunch', new prices have gone up significantly over the last two years; meaning that used prices have stayed pretty boyant.
The new bike I bought in 2008 is now well over £1000 more expensive in the shops for a hardly-updated model - and I was on the waiting list for the first batch, so no discounts.

Prices will stay pretty static this winter. Remember there's a VAT increase in January pushing up new prices, which in turn will push up used prices. Wink

In short buy now if you can.

A lot will depend on what you are selling. As someone said sub 2K stuff won't drop much. Plus you have to remember some market area's are actually on the up at the moment. With people looking for a cheap ride over the winter. Instead of using their decent bike.

If you are looking for a new bike then some dealers will do good deals. But I think this year with the known rise in VAT they may hold fast and not discount as much as normal. Thats if they have had a good year so far. And talking to a couple of dealers they have had a good couple of years.

I am not sure about the prices but selling your bike in the summer is much easier. In the winter there are shed loads of bikes on the market which makes things easier for the buyer, harder for the seller.

If the seller wants a quick sale to pay for christmas you could end up with a good bargain.

About now there can be more interest in 'disposable' winter hack type bikes from those wanting their best bike out of the salt.
