Hello all,

Can someone explain about bike tyres to me. I've seen various types describes as Sport, Touring and Super Touring.

Is this just names or is there a difference ?

Sport. Stick like shit to a blanket in they dry crap in the wet but dont last long

Sport touring. Not as sticky last a bit longer. Better in the wet than sports.

Touring. Last forever, more stable but not as grippy. good in the wet.

In a nutshell.

Jumping in quickly and apologise for hijacking.

Would it therefore be possible to put 'touring' tyres on a bike such as a Hornet, for better value, i.e longevity?

Cheers,

Steve.

Many thanks for the replies. I think Touring is the best type for me.

I'm considering new tyres for mine, have a look at the 'Tyres' thread on the the nest, its fooking huge with lots of food for thought.

Having said that, some of it has to be taken with a pinch of salt as some of the posts are from newbies, like me, on their first big bike Wink

Tyres is like beer everyone has their likes and dislikes some beer is of better pedigree than others. There is nothing simple about the part between you and th road.
They are/can be as technically advanced as the engines driving them round and round.
Mainly... stick (No pun) to the major brands Goodyear, Michelin, Continental, Dunlop, Metzler etc.
The Chinks are flooding the market with shite but steer (still no pun) away from that rubbish if you can afford to.

Sport: is made of a soft compound which sticks to the road but wears faster.

Touring: is made of a harder compound for longer lasting life but less grippy.

Sports Touring: is a mix. The middle section of tread is made of a hard Touring compound and the two outside sections are of the softer sticky Sport compound.
The idea being that when the machine it vertical grip is less critical but when the machine is leaned over the softer compound will provide increased grip.

Depending on your individual riding style pick a tyre to suit.
If you lean the bike over when you ride around corners then go for the sport touring.
If you ride more conservatively then go for touring.
If you are a mental patient go for the sport. Smile
