And in america people ride motorbikes without wearing helmets.

I think they are dumb but as long as its just their head that gets crushed, I'm happy for them to stick with their beliefs.

From my point of view, the irony is that I reckon a turban actually low tech head protection which would give you a bit of protection if someone decided to hit you on the sides of the head.

Having said that I think the top of our skulls is more sturdy than the rest of our head, so damage might not be as bad as you might think. This is because we evolved from tree dwellers who would need to be able to withstand falling things hitting them on the top of the head, i reckon.

The human head is far more susceptible to blows from the side, which is why a turban gives protection to the sides of the head, practically no extra protection on the top.

If you are going to quibble about sikhs special rights, I'd worry more about their legal rights to carry religious knives and knuckle dusters. I could be wrong but I think they exempt from our laws for that.

When I say knuckle duster, I mean the big steel bangle which some sikhs wear, which is perfectly shaped to be used as a knuckle duster.

A lot of religious stuff is purely practical, like halal and kosher.

Well there's usually a lot of hair inside that turban too so cushioning might be pretty good.

Is our skull actually thicker on top or is it just that the shape of the crown of the head makes it stronger?

I think its thicker too.

Giver yourself a bit of a hit on the top of the head, and then on the side of the head and you will feel the difference on how your brain takes the impact .

This may partly be due to it being easier for the brain to move side to side as its two hemisheres.

Someone thinks its thicker at the front and on the top.

Confused Because of the threat that Sikhism poses to our society?

Even Sikh extremism in Britain is relatively friendly unless you're muslim.

I mean you wouldn't be mistaking the Sikh religious wearing of turbans for those of the muslim faith of whom it is not required? Wink

Probably the same as with a hard hat on, it would cause serious injury or kill you.

You can guess where this is going.

Walking through site today, I started to notice alot of guys wearing them.

I'm just guessing they they don't have as much protection as a hard hat.

Also I do kow that from 10story up, hat hard or not it is going to do some damage.

I remember going back to a mates in Ilkeston after a seriously heavy Friday night in Nottingham Rock City (which got very interesting with a young lady on the steps of the council house after kicking out), back in the day. We passed a junction about 2am and there was a bike copper stood at the junction with turban on head and a big cop star badge on the front. Me and my mate freaked out completely. It was about 1985/86, so we weren't greatly worldly wise...
