Basically as its a couple of years since i did my DAS, just before the new two part test came in.

Now my mate is looking at doing his test, and has just passed his theory, and he is looking to get an unrestricted big bike, but cant afford the £300- 500 for the DAS.

Is it possible for him to book both mod 1 and mod 2 and say do a couple of lessons with an instructor?

Yes he can, but he wont be able to ride a bike bigger than a 125 to the test centre Wink

You can only do mod 1 and mod 2 on a big bike with an instructor from a training school present as far as I am aware.

Part one is done off road.

Part two you are with an examiner, if he has access to a big bike, it is fully road legal and he is insured to ride it, then I thought he could take his test on it.

Not sure about that pax. Only on the grounds that with an instructor you are insured on the company insurance to ride their bikes.

I dont know if insurance companies will insure anyone on a big bike without holding a full licence. That will have be to looked into.

You will revert to learner status while practicing (on a motorcycle greater than 25 kW) although test failure will not affect your existing licence.

Direct Access is not a course.

It costs the same regardless of what bike you do it on.

Direct access is simply taking your test on a bike with a power greater than 33bhp.

He can do lessons on any bike then ask the centre to take his test on a larger bike. Providing he does the test on a big bike that is it.

If he owns a big bike and wants to self teach he can only do so when in radio contact with a qualified instructor you cannot teach him like you would to drive a car.

He can ride a 125 on l plates without requiring an instructor providing he has a valid Cbt.

@pax it's not the exam but the getting to the exam centre on the bike that causes the issue. You can only ride it when with a qualified instructor.

I agree here, the point I am trying to make is the getting of the big bike to the test centre and insuring it on a provisional license to take mod 2. You have to sign a declaration before the test to state that the bike is both roadworthy and insured for your use.

With the nature of motorcycles being solo use only I cant see any insurance company insuring you to ride a bike you dont have a license to ride. By using the training schools and instructor on a big bike then you are insured under their company policy for the use of the bike and instructor.

I guess the only way I can see around it is to get as much experience on a 125 alone and ask a training school to book the DAS test for you and use one of their bikes.

The downside of that is most training schools will asses your ability and recomend a set amount of lessons on the bigger bike, normally between 3 and 5 days dependant on ability. They then supply the bike for the test and book the test.

You can insure them (people often buy bikes before passing) but it will cost a small fortune and it doesn't get around the needing an instructor to actually ride it anywhere.

Sounds like the best idea for him is to hang tight and save up for the DAS course or do his test on a 125 and be on a restricted licence for 2 years.

Either save up for the course or at the very least book a few lessons before the test. Then he can use their bike for the test.

I wouldn't just book the test and get a big bike to do it on. Even if he's been on the road on a 125 for years. There's so many things you forget and it's highly likely he will fail without having a few lessons to sort out the bad habits and polish up on everything else Smile

The one I am using is £45 for Mod 1 bike hire included.
£170 Mod2 bike hire and 2 hour lesson prior to test included.

did my mod1 on my own big bike "my mate" road it to the test..... was told if i do the same for mod2 just to make sure i have the insurance certificate and bring a hi vis top.... but ended up doing it with a school , just as i wanted some training anyway

Don't really know that is the prices they quoted me, I couldn't afford a full course so priced up pay as you go £100 for CBT £70 for 2 hour 125 assessment and £80 for 2 hour DAS lessons, they also hire out the actual mod 1 test centre on fridays for £30 for half hour.

Guess it pays to phone around. Wink

That's hideously expensive, I paid £135 for an entire day (9am-4pm) worth of training on a 500, inclusive of bike hire.
