I've got a bolt I'm trying to get out of the 690, currently holds the tail piece in on top of the fuel tank (located at the rear of the bike on this one!)

Bolt turns, but feels like it's jumping the thread so no upwards motion. I've tried applying all manner of pressure to encourage it upwards, but no joy, as well as hosing it down with plus gas and wd40.

Any thoughts?

It's no18 on the attached parts list, on the rhs. I honestly don't know whether it's going into a plastic thread or whether there's an insert in there.

Cheers,
Rich

Use pliers to pull as you turn it?

Dremmel. Even a cheap version will sort that out.

I'd be tempted to send an 8mm cobalt drill bit down the centre of the screw just deep enough to remove the head. Once the head has been removed you can remove the tail piece and then deal with the underlying problem without obstruction.

It's going to have to be the 8mm drill, I think.

Ruddy thing! I hope there's an insert in there, I don't fancy having to put a new thread into the petrol tank Shocked

Forget the details, but it might be going to a captive nut, that may then be spinning. I'd try using an electric/air impact wrench first if you can.

I presume you can't get anything underath it to lever it up while undoing?

I'm not sure what's underneath- the parts list is a bit hazy on that, but it's one of the grabhandle holes.

I've tried upwards pressure but that doesn't have any effect. The bolt itself turns but I can't persuade it to do what it's supposed to do!

I'm trying to get these out to install the pannier racks, so I'm not too upset if I end up destroying it.

(also, got the akra- you were right about it and the map sorting out the low end! It's like a different bike!)
