No2 Son speaking to me today (9 yrs old) about these latest solar flare headlines.
If we got hit with an EMP similar to the 1859 event, and the one that took out the electrical grid in 1989 then what would be left working.
I said that I'm glad I've got an old ZZR with no complicated electrics, but then I thought more- Its got a CDI which presumably would be fried too.

Car would be knackered as its got more computers than PC world, but I cant live without a bike.

What should I buy and put in my garage for when the revolution comes Laughing

Solar flares have quite a low localised effect, they do their damage as it's spread over a wide area. Things like power grids spread over a wide area pick this up and get screwed. Kinda like how radio waves are very weak, but a large areal focuses this to a single point. Something like a CDI will have some shielding from the EM created from a spark plug. Car bodywork is lightning proof, and that's an extreme force that's highly localised, so i doubt a solar flare could fry anything.

If you want to have a laugh try creating a spark from a battery near someone's TV aerial or wireless card Wink

Even if your car still worked, you'd have a hard time putting fuel in it, since all the electronics at the fuel station would be toast anyway.

My dad has an air compressor made using a petrol station fuel pump. It is the most heavily shielded thing i've seen outside of a nuclear reactor Laughing Sparks + pumping fuel = No.

or just find a fuel tanker and drill a hole in the side.

Let me know when you do that. I want to be there at a safe distance filming the explosion.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

goped.... nah id rather walk.

when you know the worst is coming and when its going to pass just shove all your cdi and other electrical bits in a thick metal safe. should do it. oh and get a massive agracultural plastic red diesel tank and fill it with petrol. all plastic with a nice big tap on it. will keep you foraging for food and water on the bike for months after the apocolypse.

you think points and condensers would be affected? probably not. get yourself a datsun 120y for the lulz Thumbs Up

Datsun 120Y - Cool car. First popular use of 12mm af bolts cos japs think 13 is an unlucky number (Boring factoid)
I dont think there are any electronics in condensors so we should be ok there. I'm going to get an Allegro with a square steering wheel

What about a diesel generator engine in a bike and sidecar? They don't have any electrics at all do they? Or a ural truck with a 2 stroke donkey engine?
