A go kart would in no way be as hard as you think. I know people who have built them over a weekend and they've been pretty cheap and 'whaddafuck ' but good fun and quite 'engineery'.
You could modify an old ride on lawnmower, remove the deck etc, add the engine, it's doable, in theory, although I've never done it myself.
just a quick Instructables search on Go Carts
Rack and pinnion steering wouldn't be too hard to muster up I wouldn't have thought, and there's no massive need for suspension. Although it helps I suppose. Maybe stick a couple of mountain bike rear susps on the rear wheels or something? Or a motorbike monoshock under the seat?
Don't necessarily even have to stick with the preconceived mental image of a go cart.
Engine and wheels, fair play, but the rest you can smoke some doob and draw some whacky yet simplistic design to house it all.
Just have a good sit down with a pen and paper and see what you can come up with.
Maybe, just maybe, a trike?!
Engine driving rear two wheels from a go cart or mini quad or whatever, with motorbike front end, making steering easier and much more simplistic than a DIY rack and pillion?
Cheers,
Steve. |

If you use a bike front end it will have disc brakes attached too, a heavy 400cc kart will need decent brakes . |

Cut head tube out of bike frame or motorbike frame, and weld it on to the 'soon-to-be' frame of the trike.
as is demonstrated by this guys electric trike build: https://www.instructables.com/id/600W-Electric-Trike/#step1
Weld a sprocket on to the rear axle, which would be different to the above build,
this would allow the engine to drive both rear wheels and would be a bit of a drift machine if it weighs bugger all and has what, 400cc on there? D:
Cheers,

Some good ideas coming.
I am still on the trike idea though. It can't be massive, technically it can't be bigger than a small welding booth but that's not 100% true.
That instrucatables thing is helpful, good guide that guy made.
I am basically going to mimic what he did but beef it up a bit. e.g. bigger seat, bigger wheels and 400cc 60hp engine.
Also I can easily weld a plate onto the frame to bolt a brake calliper to and a disc off something random for brakes.
Only thing I am struggling with is the drive chain. How do I get the drive from the engine to the wheels. Yes a chain and sprockets but how. I will need an axle which both wheels are bolted to and then support the rest of the frame off bearing blocks on the axle with enough room in the middle for a sprocket to be welded on. That is the most complex part of it.

Mossy it's just occured to me.
Don't cut the bike at the headtube, cut it below the petrol tank so you can allow some space to affix a bike tank relatively easily, on to mounting points that will already be there
Only problem I can think of regarding the above, is the length of the fuel line you'd probably need. Shouldn't be too much of an issue however. |
