Having a few problems with the bike at the moment.

Noticed the other day that the rear brake disc was perilously close to the left hand side of the caliper body. This was definately not always the case. I estimated that there was less than 1mm clearance. Suspecting that there was something up with the fairly recently installed pads, I took the caliper off for a better look, suspecting that one of the pistons was jammed. Appears not, both pistons are exposed the same amount.

At a bit of a loss I compared the spindle assembly to the Haynes in case put it back together incorrectly. Seemingly not. Evidence though that the disc has definately made contact with the caliper body, on the left. Disc does not appear warped.

However, a glance at the rear wheel reveals a rusted worn out sprocket carrier bearing, which will have to be replaced.

Could the worn carrier bearing or indeed possibly worn wheel bearings have caused the problem with the caliper, for example, causing the wheel to move left slightly?

Any other suggestions as to what the problem is?

thanks

i would expect it would be more likely to be from an incorrectly installed rear whell. have you had a tyre change recently?

which side is really close? the outside or the inside of the caliper?

Hi

The spacers should keep the wheel securely located. However if the spacer between the sprocket carrier and the wheel is lost (quite common) then the wheel won't be correctly position (and the sprocket carrier bearing will be wrecked pretty quickly).

All the best

Keith

Thanks for the responses.

Keith, I'm almost certain that is what has happened, seems the most likely scenario. Possibly when I last removed the wheel the spacer went walkies. Will recheck the Haynes and fiches and work out what is missing.

Hopefully the failed bearing hasn't resulted in damage to any other parts.

Thumbs Up
