So i just bought a new nsr 125, which now unfortunately wont start.

i know that it runs, as my dad rode it 20 odd miles to my house. i have also run the engine while it was on my drive (although it only managed to idle for 20 seconds unnattended before conking out - is this normal for a 2 stroke from cold?)

i then couldnt start it because of a flat battery, i replaced the battery and it started. (at this point i had forgotten that i had earlier turned the fuel tap off while having a look inside the bike.)

so i ran it for a minute, then left it - it then stalled after running for about 15 seconds. i assumed this was because it was cold, as it had done the same thing before i had replaced the battery. only this time, i couldnt get it to start and spent a few minutes in total cranking the engine.

after about 10 total minutes of trying to start the engine, i realised that i had the fuel tap turned off - i'd been running the fuel system empty for the last few minutes, obviously i turned the tap back to the on position. i've been trying to start it now for about 20 minutes over the last few days, and have not heard the engine ignite a single time, i can smell fuel from the exhaust and the starter motor doesnt sound like its struggling.

my guess is that i have fouled the plug with oil by running the engine with no combustion to burn it away.

just a small problem, i cant get the spark plug out of the head to test this... its incredibly @*%& frustrating. i can get to it, but theres not much room to work, and try as hard as i can with my ratchet and plug socket, i cant get it to budge an inch.

so before i call in a garage to take it away and have a proper crack at getting the plug out (and charge me £65 an hour labour + £30 pickup), is there any other reason why it wont start that i may have created by running the engine for so long with the fuel tap off?

i know that the rest of the ignition system works, as i have unplugged the cap and put it on a new spark plug and earthed it against the body while cranking and it definitely sparks.

so, is there any common problem that i might have made by running the engine with the fuel cut off?]

thanks for any help.

Take off the fuel tank and get proper access to the engine.
Or pay a garage to take the fuel tank ogff to get proper access to the engine.

Sounds like the plug is wet with fuel.

To clear a wet cylinder you need to:
Put the choke OFF.
Open the throttle fully open.
Crank the engine over for about ten seconds with the throttle held open.
Close the throttle.
Put the choke on full.
Crack the throttle open about an 8th-3/16 of an inch or about (3-4mm in new money) whilst you...
Crank the engine over.
Should start then.
If not come back here.

a proper spark plug remover works fine as just changed my plug

sounds to me like your battery is probably knackered or not holding its charge for long unless your running it every day

So i did this and it kicked into life first try and ran perfectly. i ran it for about 3 minutes, then took it out on the road, i got about 100 yards down my road in 2nd gear, accidentaly revved it to 5000 when i put the clutch in after which it conked out. it started again briefly but wouldnt respond to throttle and died again.

since then i havent been able to get it started, battery isnt the problem as ive tried a fresh full charged one from my dads bike, tried bump starting it with me pushing my dad, and tried to start it under its own steam with jumper cables on my dads bike.

same story as before - it cranks, i can smell fuel but i dont hear it fire a single time. ive tried multiple times using the same cylinder clearing method that walloper suggested but havent had a single spark of life since it died the second time.

so once more before i sign over my life savings to the garage, any ideas what the problem could be?

You need to get the plug out and clean it properly.

If the plug is new-ish, then it can't be corroded in the head. So get a good socket on there, man-up, get some hammers and long poles out and get it undone!! - but ffs make sure you have the ratchet set to undo first!! Confused
