Van Batterry dieing ... :(

With mate today in his Fiat Ducato 2.8 liter Van / motorhome ... ex ambulance / ............

The batterry keeps discharging .... i've unplugged the neg ... will check water level in morning ... it seemed to charge on one journey and not another, and then when stationery .. loses charge ..

Any ideas for my mate ...

Its battery dying time of the year. As soon as the weather changes they drop like flies.

a) Check electrolyte levels.
b) Check voltage without the engine running. Should be 12-12.5V
c) Check voltate with engine running. Should be 13.5-14V
d) Disconnect the battery overnight so there's no chance of anything on the vehicle discharging it. If its ok in the morning then we know something is draining power. If its not ok then the battery is knackered.
e) If your 100% sure everything electrical is switched off then disconnect the alternator overnight and try again. The diode plates can fail causing the alternator to act as a motor and drain power, sometimes the alternator will feel warm in the mornings when this happens.
