hi, my 1993 st1100 is a bit rattly, i cant really track down the noise.
its sort of coming from the front of the engine area, happens at between 1100-3000 rpm, but doesnt get quicker with the revs. its almost like a ticking rattle, almost as though something is loose and vibrating but ive looked and as far as i can see and there is nothing loose.
the bike has got 44k on the clocks and has had a service in the last thousand miles. the bike seems to ride ok, no problem with power, and the noise seems to stop above 3k revs, but that could just be me not hearing it as the bike gets louder!
any ideas?
also, not sure if its related but i could probably do with checking the valve clearences and getting the carbs synched. not being the most technically minded person could anyone tell me how easy these are to do and possibly put up some kind of description of what i need to do it and how?
many thanks
dan

Does it do it when stood or on the move ?
Who serviced the bike ?

Get a screwdriver or metal rod and with one end to the ear and the other to various area's of the engine you can located the noise. ( mind the hot exhausts though.

Could just be something simple like a bit of the fairing loose, or something stuck in it.

hi, it seems to be when its more on the move than stood still.
i did the service, it had an oil and filter, plugs, brake pads and tyres changed. air filter was ok.
i thought about listening with a screwdriver, but when i get down on the ground to hear it, i cant trace it. when im sat on the bike it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine on the right but when im down there, it sounds more like its coming from the back left! but if i move there it sounds like its coming from the top! lol
i think i need to strip all the body work off and try to find some randome loose part, but i just wondered if it might be connected to the carbs needing to be balanced, ive been told this can cause all sorts of vibrations!
thanks
dan

Ive not worked on a pan before but if any other 4 cylinder Honda made a noise like that i would suggest it needed a cam chain tensioner.

hi, would that be anything major? ive been told and seen on a few pan forums that its not even due an inspection til 60k and changed at 90k, so its not something id even thought of.
a few others have said the exhaust heat sheilds are known to crack or come loose and cause a rattle at certain revs, so im going to get the tupperware off tomorrow and check those out.
