KTM 520 sumo conversion

Personally i hate supermotos with a passion (why use an offroad bike with sports tyres? defeats the object)

but being open minded, i want to try it to see why people love them so much, and on my own bike so i dont care about stacking it.

£300-700 on wheels? fuck that.

The breakers will sell me a pair of RS125 wheels for £50, and will swap the brand new rubber from my mito wheels onto them.

is there any reason for this not to work before i start? i can machine all spacers myself, and make the caliper bracket.

and as far as i know, the spindle sizes are the same.

am i overlooking something?

Should be fine if spindles and spacing are ok - the reason people go for expensive spoked wheels is using it for 'real' supermoto (ie including jumps etc) can crack cast wheels I believe.

Also the tyre size you can go on an rs rear wheel will be nowhere near what you could with propper supermoto wheels.

i used rs125 wheels but the rear hub is very wide and had to be machined alittle off both sides but that was for a cr250

'Proper' wheels are just like your standard dirt wheels - rim, spokes and hub. Think the hub is often cast, but it's the rim that's the issue.
Ie, my 200 has a big dent in the rim, but is still perfectly usable, while if similar happens to a cast rim you're going to have serious problems - and I'm lead to believe it's more likely to happen, as it's not made to take the regular impacts and stones etc.

And yea, rare you'll get over 150 on a converted supermoto - couple of times I've bought part worns in 160 from supermotos which have had one side chewed off by the chain.

Remember that KTM changed front wheel size between 02 and 03, however you can get adaptor kits - at the moment I've actually got the older wheels running on newer bikes and have had it the other way around too.

sounds like pretty much a done sale tbh. my mate with the 380 exc wants them, and says i can borrow them to try. everyones a winner.

do you know if they could be made to fit RWU forks that come on the middle aged 380's? not sure of the spindle size.

if you can machine spacers, there's no probs using mag wheels, yea people say they are slightly weaker which is true but unless your going to be hitting curbs and shit, the odd wheelie aint going do much damage if any.

I don't see what there is to hate, you got your offroad wheels for offroading, then you can swap over your supermoto wheels to have a laugh on the road. Best of both worlds.

Once you try it I reckon you will like it, I've always had way more fun riding supermotos than riding sportsbikes on the road.
