Hello,

wondering if anyone has any ideas on a problem i am having, my gf has a small 50 cc quad bike non geared dinili that we use round our paddocks. recently it has developed a fault, it will tick over but as soon as you rev it it dies. i have changed the air filter spark plug and fuel filter and it ran fine for 2 weeks then the same symptoms have returned,

basically its worth nothing, (but handy to have) anyone have any ideas what it could be.? before i consign it to a skip

cheers

A few possibilities. Did changing the filters and plug completely fix the problem, or just make it a bit less of a problem?

The quad is being used in muddy conditions, and recently it's been wet. Wet mud will block and saturate an air filter, so have a look and see if this has happened. If the air filter isn't a washable foam one, see if you can get one for it.

Dirt or water in the fuel is the next port of call - the fuel filter will catch new crud coming down from the tank and hold some water back for a short while.

Simple things first. Check the air filter, and drain the carb into a clean jam jar to check for dirt and/or water in the fuel. There should be a screw on the bottom of the float bowl to drain the carb. After draining, close the screw and turn the fuel back on to fill it and see if it runs a bit better.

Otherwise I'd go with crap in the mixture circuit, not the main jet. Main jet only fully comes into play on full throttle and is fairly hard to block, being a fairly big hole with lots of fuel going through it at a fair rate. Mixture needle regulates a very small hole and has the most bearing on the engine running at a closed or very slightly open throttle. The fix is to get the carb out, strip it and clean it, hence trying the simple fixes first.
