What do you reckon the average age of a bike is before it has its (first) crash?

By crash I mean anything from falling off the stand in the drive to total write-off.

Que a link to a gixxer being crashed as it leaves the showroom.....!

Seriously - How long is a piece of string? I'd hazard a guess that, in general, sports bikes are more likely to have unfortunate accidents than cruisers earlier, due to the riding style usually seen, but thats pure guessing and generalisation.

Give me err 3 hours! I've managed to drop my bikes as soon as I get home from picking them up or after my first ride!

A lot of it is down to the unfamiliarity of a new bike and overbalancing it when you try to manoeuvre it in the back.

ZXR250 - WAS ABSOLUTELY SURE THE STAND was down.. oops!

I did it on the ZX6R when I tried to do a 3 point turn in the back garden.
Dropped the blade in gravel when I lost the front at 0mph!

I didn't mind then because it was either grass or gravel.

My NC29 had clearly been dropped and crashed in it's life. But it was a 1991 J Reg.

My NC30 was on an N reg, 1995. That, I can honestly say, has (Had) never been dropped or pranged in it's life.

It was 100% original when I bought it, minus a KPH to MPH converter in the back of the speedo.

Fairings looked like they'd never been off, all original bolts holding them on.
It was a 2 previous owner, MINTER of a bike.
Unfortunately I blew it up doing wheelies on it all the time.

My TLR1000 is another bike, that I can 100% rest assured was never dropped by any previous owners.

Granted, the rear sets and levers were Harris and Pazzo, Not original items.
But original items were provided with the bike, and in mint condition.
Was also no marks on the fairings, Not even a scuff. The only mark on the entire bike was a chip on the tank. Defo never been crashed.
That was a 2001 bike.

On the other hand, I've got mates with 2008/2009 bikes which are now written off.

My bikes been dropped a couple of times. One looks like a moving fall aswel.

Indicators bent etc. But it's a CG so who cares. Once I've done my test and I am but waiting for the time to pass by, I will give it a bit TLC. and straighten some of these little bends.

I have not yet fallen over or dropped the bike however there have been some close ones..

I did however drop my bro's bike which broke the clutch lever and a flower plant it fell on ^^

My bike is a '91 H reg

I've owned 5 bikes in exactly 4 years on the road. Every single one of them has met the ground at least once in my ownership.

I had the GPZ about 2 years before I dropped/laid it down after sliding on an oil patch. That was the only time I dropped it... but it was a 1991 model with 2 previous owners, and one of the indicator housings was damaged when I bought it, so it had been dropped at least once previously.

I've had the Bandit since Nov2009 and dropped/lowered it on its side twice in that time. Once when getting it off the centre stand when I was unfamiliar with the bike, and more recently when wheeling it on uneven ground. Result is just one tiny scratch on the bar end.
Although it's got a tiny dent in the left hand side of the tank, so it looks like the bike has been dropped by a previous owner too

If fairness, only once or twice a bike - ground interface was down to me riding badly, the rest is either ice or crashes (non-fault). Laughing

Had my bandit since October 2007 and it has been on the ground twice Embarassed

1st time i laid it down when I put my foot out but because of the camber, there was nothing their Shocked Only damage was a broken clutch lever and a little mark on the engine casing.
2nd time at work, had unlocked the gate wheeled the bike through and was locking the gate when I heard the unmistakable noise of a bandit hitting the fence. I hadnt checked the sidestand after I moved the bike forward Rolling Eyes Damage was a broken left mirror.

New tyres, piston rings, brake pads, new BIKE: READY, SET, GO! Very Happy

Wroom, Wroom, Mr. Squid

I've crashed my Aprilia RS 125 FP 1 month in, while doing a speedy left turn due to understeer & inexperience: bent shift lever mounting bolt, along with some cosmetic damage and a sore knee.

Second crash: doing a 90 degrees left turn at 5-7MPH onto gravel road, which was going uphill: soft landing on right side and a broken carbon turn signal. Crying or Very sad

Gravel's a killer for sportbikes with short wheelbase. Twisted Evil

1992 GSX-R750 I just sold had never been crashed. No marks, all original bits. It was an import and even had the OEM Jap spec indicators.

1998 Fireblade I had last year was likewise. 44k on the clock and barely a stone chip, never mind any scuffs to the metalwork.

2005 Firestorm was perfect, but then that had only done 6000km, so it was basically new.

2000 Aprilia Falco perfect also.

Everything else I've had or bought (apart from the new Tuono), had clearly been scraped or crashed at some point in their lives: '92 VFR750/'05 XR125/2000 SP-1/'05 Husky SM610S/'90 Guzzi Cali III.

So in my experience, with bikes of an average age of about 10 years, around half of them were crash damaged at time of purchase. But then I did avoid it if possible when buying, and the damage on the ones i did buy was either so superficial or completely repaired so as not to bother me.

I'd say probably 3-4 years any given bike will last, on average, without being crashed. If that.

125 intruder - never dropped it.

600f - never dropped it.

2003rr - never dropped it (absolute minter of a bike as well).

2007rr - dropped it within 3 months in the middle of winter Sad it wasn't even 3 months old.

I've since figured if you get overly precious, you get more nervous and at that point dick around too much and crash.

I think some of it depends on luck, when you ride, where you ride etc.

This applies especially to winter & gravel/offroad. I've yet to find a patch of ice on the roads I use in winter to practice on with my 6 years of biking. Shocked

P.S. Practically all bikes from the now on will feature ABS, most liter bikes are going to have TC as well. BMW set the bar high with the S1000RR, which I'm looking forward to. Wink

On learner bikes - about three months max.

On 33hp favourites like the ER5 - about six months.

On most other bikes, probably about two years.

Some - usually Harleys, BMWs and assorted fat customs - tend to be ridden slowly and carefully and often never go down the road.

I think possibly the most crashed bike ever made was the KR1/KR1-S. I have never seen one that hasn't been stacked multiple times. For some odd reason they seemed to attract head bangers who couldn't stop falling off.

Way back in the days before mobile phones I had an RXS 100 that broke down a few miles from home. So I wheeled it over to the phone box and called home to arrange a lift. Put the side stand down and walked to the phone box and in the reflection of the door I saw a bike that looked an awful lot like mine slowly fall over.

The side stand had given up the ghost.

Dropped my 125 a couple of times in the 18 months I had her and dropped the 750 once in the wet.

Hopefully I wont drop the next bike but thats probably wishful thinking.

Bikes fall over. Its a fact of life. Ask Casey Stoner. He's dropped his a fair few times. Laughing

Place your bets: My 2010 BMW S1000RR First Video! You can see traction control kick in on the left, when he's accelerating and the wheel wants to go up. Very Happy The suspension on the S1000RR is rough, just the way I like it and he's lucky to have it for them Kalyfornia roads. Twisted Evil

As a general observation: any bike in the hands of a 16-17 year olds gets an average 2 months before a crash, due to the riders being overly enthusiastic, as well as inexperienced.
