Well I decided to buy myself a present as I recently got promoted at work. Say hello to my Varadero 125 -

https://img827.imageshack.us/img827/6596/varadero125.jpg

It's on an 07 plate with 4000 on the clock and I picked her up with FSH, new tyres, MOT, but no tax, for £2,500. I didn't fancy trying to do any long journeys on my GP100 and plus I want a bigger bike feel for when I do my test. Fuel consumption will be loads better, I was only getting 65-70 Miles to reserve on the GP.

So there we go, I did a 60 mile round trip on it straight away and I've been grinning ever since I got back yesterday. It feels so much more stable on the road. Ok, so the acceleration is not amazing but I managed to get 75 out of it. When I was going 60 on the GP it felt stupidly fast, but 70 on this feels like 40 on the GP.

A fun little story on buying the bike -

Went to look at it on Tuesday, filled out the paperwork and agreed to pick it up on Saturday. Sorted out the insurance on Wednesday and asked them to email proof of insurance to the dealer as it needed to be taxed. Phoned up the dealer to say an email was on the way. Thursday, no email sent, Friday, no email sent, Saturday, No documents in the post, no email. Shit, now what. Me and my dad picked it up from the dealer and brought it back home. I phoned up the insurance (again ffs!) and asked them to email me the proof so I can see if I can get it taxed. Went to the post office with 5 mins to spare!! and hey presto, got the tax, went on my way.

A couple of mates that've seen it can't believe it's a 125, it's hilarious to see peoples faces when they realise it's not what they thought.

Anyway, DAS, here I come (In feb next year, lol)

I had a Varadero 125 when I was on L plates. It was a really good bike and a good physical size. It made the Fazer 600 I ha when I passed my test feel small!!

Enjoy mate, you made a good choice

Cheers mate Thumbs Up

Like I said, I'm still grinning and probably won't stop grinning for a while yet lol. I'm planning on getting the center stand very very soon as it's my first bike with a side stand and it makes me nervous in case it drop to the floor. Plus I want to be able to do maintenance properly.

Yeah, it's just that I want the "feel" of the bigger bike before I do my lessons and test on a bigger one. It doesn't make sense to take lessons and a test on a bigger one only to keep on riding my GP100 until I pass. I feel vulnerable on the GP. With the varadero I feel like I've got more road presence. I'm already coping pretty well with the weight and I've only had it 2 days lol.

I suggest you read it you can do DAS on a 125 as it's classed as a motorcycle. Taken from that link:

"After taking Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and the theory test, the practical test may be taken on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW. A pass allows you to ride any size of bike. All or part of the CBT course may be taken on either a learner bike or a large bike. To practice for the practical test on bikes larger than the learner bike specification you must:

: be accompanied at all times by an approved instructor on another bike and in radio contact
: wear fluorescent or reflective clothing
: follow all other provisional licence restrictions

You cannot do DAS on a 125 because as it CLEARLY states you need a vehicle outputting a minimum of 35kw. DAS = DIRECT ACCESS. as in direct access to a bigger bike. The A2 license isn't DAS because it's an A2 Confused

As for the OP, i see what you meant by the whole "feel for a bigger bike" thing now. just making sure you wouldn't end up disappointed! Smile good luck for when the time comes

No it says you May use a motorcycle with that output, doesn't mention anything about not doing DAS on a 125. DAS is what it says it's a means to get a fully unrestricted license as far as I'm aware there's no rule against using a 125.

TRUST me. DAS MUST be over 35kw. Doing the test on a 125 will result in an A2 license with a 33bhp limit for 2 years. that is NOT DAS.

11kw 125 - A2
35kw 500etc. - DAS

No. It means you must take the DAS on a motorcyce with the power output of at LEAST 35kw.
It is not a request and it is not up to you whether you use a 125 or a 500cc.

Why on earth would they allow you to take the big bike licence on a 125. That would completely defeat the purpose of you displaying you can handle a big bike.
Use some logic man.

To the OP. Congrats on the new bike Smile
Looks like a good choice. Hope you have fun on it over winter.

Thanks man, I look forward experiencing different types of weather as I don't see the point of only being able to ride when the sun's beaming down. If it's fine when I'm at work or round a mates house, it could be chucking it down, snowing, icy as crap and then I'll be stuck lol.

Sorry for starting a debate guys, maybe I should have been a little clearer in my first post about my intentions. I think I wasn't that clear about what my intentions were as I'm THAT exited about getting my new bike. I've only had it since saturday and after my first long ride that day and the usual 20 mile commute I'm very sure that I made the right choice. I'm so relaxed and confident on it too, it's already making me a better rider.

Still, I'm yet to get the centre stand and top box, but I'm all spent up for this month and it's only the flamin 5th!

Don't look at it as "i've caused a debate" look at it as "i've helped some people learn something". Everyone's gotta learn everything SOMEWHERE, you don't get any info without learning it! Must say i'm feeling rather jealous about your bike. I'd quite like a faster 125 or maybe a 250 but due to money i'm gonna have to jump to a 500. although petrol will kill me, i'll just have to start riding VERY economically.

DAS test has to have around 50 bhp from my memory of doing my test in August.

Maybe it does not state 125, but no 125 that is standard can produce that kind of power.

Well the best road 2t 125s give out about 30-35 BHP. which is about 25-28Kw. so based on that, nothing's gonna get a 2t up to 35kw. and even if it did.. it wouldn't last the length of a test Razz

Very good bikes to learn on, it was my first bike. Thumbs Up I used mine as a commuter through Glasgow and did not have a garage so ended up going orange in a lot of places.

I was erring on the side of generosity, so nobody tried to come along and say "such n such gives out 31bhp according to ChavMagMonthly" etc. Although I think the older RS125's managed to kick out just over 30.. when they were new
