If it has done 8000 miles without an oil change then I would expect some pretty serious wear, interval on that should be between 2000 and 4000 miles.

Use 10W40 oil with a new filter. Capacity is probably around 2 litres, so just buy a 4 litre bottle.

Just buy the cheapest 10w40 that is suitable for bikes. Car oil has friction reducing compounds that can mess up your clutch. I know some people use car oil without any issues, I personally would use bike oil though.

thanks,
actually there is service history on the bike. I just haven't checked it in detail when the last service was done. Only bought the bike last weekend Smile

BS from the 1920s.

Any semi-synth 10W30/40 bike oil will do.

Don't worry too much about the excessive miles on the oil.
Modern oil can cope.
15hp engine will not have seriously mashed up the oil. And the bike would probably not have been raced around like an Aprilia 125-Julius Seizer.

Though as a rule, you should change when the manufacturer says. or within 500 miles to be safe.

As well as lubricating/reducing friction/carrying the mechanical loads between close fitting parts oil does several other important jobs in the engine.
It cools the metal, removes combustion by products and reduces effects of oxygen and other corrosive stuff.
The longer the oil is in the engine the more unwanted compounds build up in the oil.
Oil changes are designed to remove the rubbish and refresh the protective additives.
The lubricating quality will probably remain the same 'In Grade'.

Extra wear due to not servicing regularly would result over more than 8000 miles. And if service schedules were completely ignored or missed.

Since it's had an 'extended' service interval you could treat it to some TLC and by the oil off the second shelf from bottom for your peace of mind. By oil specifically for motorcycles (and beware that it is for Four Stroke and not Two Stroke which is the stuff you mix with the petrol.)
Fit a Honda oil filter or a good quality match but if you cannot be certain fit OEM parts.

Warm the engine before bosching the old oil and dispose of the oil oil at your local recycling centre. (Or you will kill all of the fish I'm try to catch.)

thanks for that.

My insurance was cheaper than my CG on this bike!!! Shocked

CG = £124
Shadow = £79
what's going on.... But im happy Very Happy

Just had a look at the servicing receipts. The chap I bought the bike from actually took good care of the bike and had it regularly serviced.
Plenty of receipts of work done.
