hi all, i'm doing an oil change soon, i'm after a top notch oil for my fzs600 99-.
the recomended by ESB yamaha is motul 10w-40 semi synthetic, dont know anything about this.
i need an oil that is especially good with gearboxes as fazers are known for a crunchy box as is and id like to protect it as best as possible. some people just buy the £5 5ltr oils from asda and say its fine but im after something with a bit of piece of mind attached with it, many thanks ____________________

It seems Opie Oils has a discount currently on Motul oil.

I just use Castrol GTX in my bikes, £12 for 4 litres. ____________________ Suzuki GT250 x7------- Fazer 600------CB250RS------Aprilia Rally 70----- Bandit 600

Mobil 1 is one of the best oils out there. This is reflected in its price.
That said, you could have changed normal oil 3 times over for the same cost which almost certainly be better still. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

NEVER use shit oil. It's just not worth it. Certain areas deserve the money spent.. oil is definitely one of those areas. Semi-Synth AT LEAST ____________________ 57 Huoniao HN125-8 - , 97 Kawasaki GPZ500S -

i know ive heard the same off a mate of mine who is a high milage biker and canes it alot. he has had 2 gearboxes go on him and i fairly sure its due to the crap oil he uses but changes regularily. surely to god a more expensive oil is better? even if marginally. would i be fine to use fully synthetic then? if i can i will. mineral oil to me just sounds to imprecise. ____________________

I'd have said a cheaper oil changed twice as often would be better than an expensive oil.
I'm not saying use the most cheapo oil in the shop, but I don't see the point in blowing your wad on a super-duper one. Your bike isn't specced for it (bikes use pretty low spec oil) and as you point out, it's going to get pounded through the clutch and gearbox.
In general terms, a fancier oil lasts longer before degrading past useful lubrication levels, that's what you're paying for. Anything of the correct specification should however maintain adequate lubrication for the stated service intervals.
Certainly wont do any harm to use a very high spec oil. It's your money.
EDIT: From what I can see, the "classic" Yamaha gearbox failure is caused by the box tangling after arsing the 1st to 2nd change and bending one of the selector forks which in turn causes worn dogs on the gears. Even the most expensive oil in the world won't prevent a bent selector fork. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen.
