Decided to make some LED Mirror indicators, i know that they can be bought for £25 ish, but fancied trying to make some to see how they'd turn out...

bought some new mirrors from e-gay for a massive £6.50 :

https://i.ebayimg.com/15/!B9z1J0QCWk~$(KGrHqF,!jUEzKMW-kJMBM628KCRLw~~0_12.JPG

and some LEDs also from ebay, 10x for £8 - bargain, got some "superbright" orange ones.

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/171220101274.jpg

first job was to mark out and drill the holes for the LEDS - the paint chipped all round the holes, but this didn't matter too much as the leds will cover most of it :

Then to "feed" the wires through the first hole, and pull out the second, the lights will be wired up in series, purely for ease !!

once all lights were in and connected, i tested on my mouse PSU, only 8v but worked well enough:

Sorted.

Then removed the mirrors from the SV, and went about fixing these.. i'll need to sort some way of removing the rubber covers from the storks on the old mirrors and putting over these to cover up the bolts and wiring, (also fitted new black bubble screen whilst i was workin on the bike)

https://i1016.photobucket.com/albums/af282/Oliver7978/181220101296.jpg

haven't wired them in yet, as i need to get hold of some resistors to sort out the flash rate before removing the old indi's.. but generally, quite happy with my £14 mirrors !!!!

Should have got smaller ones and put them in the shape of an arrow pointing the direction of the flash.

Looks like a cool idea.

You can buy a flasher unit that works with LEDs and bulbs together I have on on my S4, much better than using resistors.

I know eff all about lights and stuff so forgive the stupid question here.... can't you just connect the wires to the old indicator wires?

I like that suggestion for arranging lights into arrow shapes.

They look good but my only criticism on them is that they would have looked better if they were flush with the mirror.... but that's only my opinion

Incandescent indicators draw about 4 -6 amps, leds (at a guess) are probably closer to 1.
If the bike is fitted with a mechanical relay the LEDs will not provide enough load to control the flash rate, they will flash too fast. An electronic relay will work at loads from 0.2a up to about 20a so will flash at a constant rate irrespective of the type of bulbs fitted.

Not all good though, its hard to know if one of your indicators has failed unless you check them.

I would have liked to make the LED's flush, but the miror glass doesn't come out of the housing, so i could only put the lamps in from the outside, so needed some sort of "ridge" so that they didn't just fall into the housing and get lost forever !

Reasonable idea, but how good are the new mirrors? I've had cheapos which vibrate to buggery, rendering them useless.

Realistically does anyone actually use mirrors anyway D O G? Or is that just my bad habit?

Sorry OI? I was just being picky.... I'm a perfectionist.... I would lose weeks of sleep with something like that.

Anyway after a couple of seconds of thought (and a couple of beers), I would like to have a couple of lines of LED's in the mirror that when you click the indicator it would show as running LED's (not sure of the correct term but would look like, for example if indicating right and with an 8 LED set-up, start at bulb 1 and light the rest of the sequence so it looks like it's pointing in the direction you're turning).... spent so long typing this post I haven't got an effin clue what I'm going on about..... hmmm... long hours and too much beeer (and wine)

A simple trick to stop the paint chipping when you drill it is to use masking tape. Put the tape over the area you are going to drill, then measure and mark on to the tape. Leave the tape there while you drill and then remove it, jobs a good 'un Smile

I use mine loads as well. Until 5 months ago though, I never rode with them. Now I don't think I could ride without them.

Dont vibrate too much, certainely no worse that the OE ones did - however these are slightly smaller, so i now see even more of my elbows, and less of whatever is behind me... Rolling Eyes

really should have done that - but luckily, as the led's aren't recessed, the lip on them does cover 90% of where the paints come off because of shoddy drilling!!

Nice idea and similar to something I tried to do to the rear lights of my American car that had no indicators, however, it looks far too DIY the way it's been done and therefore i'm not a fan, think the GSXR style mirrors with indicators in would've looked better. You really need to clean your bike though first, especially the exhaust!

The bike has since been cleaned - i gave it a coat of ACF50 about a month before, so didn't want to wash it all off before i got some more!!

I've no doubt the GSXR mirrors would have looked better, but i wanted to have a go at making some myself - i've still got the origional SV mirrors + indi's etc, so when i come to sell it i'll most likely put it all back to standard.

I know they aren't perfect, but if i never tried actually doing anything like this, i'd never get any better at it !! everyones got to start somewhere!

Also - have now added the rubber cover / sleeve from the origional mirrors, and think it looks a lot better :

Don't know if its been said but you can connect them in parallel with the current indicators and have both working at the same time. Shouldn't affect the flash rate atall.

+1 I think maybe if you cut back the plastick, made a ledge like and put like 20 leds in there with a clear perspex similair to office lighting it would of given a nice original effect. Good attempt though.
