I think they're a bit prone to the starter clutch jamming, and sometimes they break the starter gear on the rear of the clutch basket. From the sound of it (being locked up) I'd suspect something like this. The oil drip is normal-it gathers in the recess and will spill out usually when you move the bike and it just leans one way. Normally about a tablespoon or two. More than that & maybe there's another problem to resolve. May be best to remove the starter motor & see if you can rotate the engine on the big nut on the crankshaft. Or bung it on the mainstand, into gear & use the rear wheel to turn it over. |

I used to run my GS500 on pri all the time. |

Agreed
| chris-red wrote: | Ever thought that the reason the oil is high on the sight glass is the side stand? |
I certainly would think that if it were on its side stand rather than the center on a perfectly level surface from which I have monitored oil levels for years.
| Quote: | What side covers are you talking about taking off? The engine casings? Again you seem to have jumped several stages so you can take it apart. |
pulse cover and starter clutch cover. I've been over hauling the carbs due to some other problem in recent weeks...
| chris-red wrote: | What gear did you use when you bumped it? |
1 2 and 3
| chris-red wrote: | Just because it is a new battery doesn't mean it has decent charge. |
I know this and I have more than one battery. You don't know my background but then I wouldn't expect you to.
| chris-red wrote: | I agree that it could also be the starter again bumping could prove this. |
I've tried A LOT, and will try again when I have some oil in. Will be interesting to see it its still 'stuck'.
| chris-red wrote: | I might be wrong but I don't thing the starter clutch is oil. |
Sorry, I don't know what you're getting at here?
| chris-red wrote: | Calm down and stop thinking the worse and stop taking it apart. |
Calm down? If i calmed down anymore, i'd enter a state of hibernation lol. Now I know you prefixed your reply with "no offence" but that just sounds patronising. However, I won't take it as so, I'm a picture of calm
PS
Thanks to everyone for their help, it's much appreciated! |
