Well due to leaving my job a little while ago, I think it's time to get rid of the ninja. It isn't the cheapest bike to insure as a 24 year old, and I can get a fair bit of cash to help out with Christmas in the mean time. So, I decided to keep an eye out for a cheap runabout for the winter.

I viewed a couple, and was set on this SV650. It has 47k on the clock, double exhausts, came with a givi rack, and seems to work just fine. I managed to get it for £700, which I think was a bit of a bargain.

Here are a few photos from when I got it home.

That was last night, and I just put it in the garage and left it for the night. Today I went out to get a better look around.

I started off with taking that rack off. I was looking at getting a top box, but for now ill leave it off.

I then took a look at some of the corrosion underneath where the rack was.

Not the greatest, but could have been a lot worse. This is only a winter bike/temporary solution.

The lack of rear hugger is something that needs to be addressed.

I also found the most rounded off screw I think I've ever found Shocked

So I have some plans for this. Although its only a cheap runabout, some cosmetic things need addressing. Plans are a change of headlight, belly pan, and maybe a tail tidy.

That's it for now. Hopefully I'll transfer the insurance over tomorrow and report that its a bearable solution to my money woes Mr. Green

So, you bought this as a cheap winter hack as you don't have a job... and plan to add a belly pan, tail tidy, and change the headlight?

Hardly budget man.

Tidy those double cans up and they fetch quite a bit.

I do plan to add things, but they will be added as and when I have money. The lack of job is a very temporary thing. The downgrade is also something I should have done a while ago. I also spent less than I planned, and can't ride a bike I hate the look of. Cool

The double cams seem quite rare, and I was considering selling them, but think ill keep them for now.

Thanks. Thumbs Up

Tom, it was indeed. Being sold by a car dealer who had no idea. Couple of issues with it, but with new tyres and a sweet engine, it wasn't a bad buy. I considered going back to a 500 twin, but thought this was less of a downgrade. On and it sounds ridiculously loud, with baffles Shocked

Well not much has happened to this recently. I've put on some heated grips, and its been ridden most days. I did put on some yellow rim tape, which I quite like personally.

Today I was also planning on some simple brake bleeding. With all the tools ready though, I fell at the first hurdle of trying to remove the master cylinder cap. The two screws were like cheese, and this wouldn't come off. It took a flat head screwdriver and a lot of hammering, but they eventually budged.

https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8212/8342778314_1b21d0daa5_c.jpg

Before doing this I did have a quick look at the brakes to make sure I didn't need to do any major servicing. I had a fight with some stubborn bolts, but my new socket set came in very handy.

The seals and pads looked ok to me. The pads are actually quite new EBC pads, so that's a bonus.

Anyway, with the brakes on hold, I decided it was about time I fitted the new bolt for my headlight that I've had lying around. One of the bolts that holds the casing onto the mounting plate somehow came out a while ago, and I've just used a random nut and bolt to keep it secured.

But first, can anyone tell me what this is...

So off came the headlight, and the corrosion underneath looks, well, lovely.

With the headlight off, it was a simple job of bolting the casing onto the mounting plate.

Something so satisfying about completely new parts Cool

With that done, it was time for the most important and time consuming part of the process...

It's the left-right adjuster screw for the headlamp beam.

That makes sense. It baffled me because it looks so unnatural on the front, like it wasn't the original placement for it.

I've just spent ages trying to figure it out...

Hahaha, excellent. There were quite a few in there actually. Next time I'll try to be more specific Mr. Green

Cheers Thumbs Up

It looks a lot better now I've cleaned and sorted some small bits. Hopefully once I sort the brakes properly and fix the constant oil leak from the clutch cover it'll all be running sweet.

How does it sound with the twin pipes on the back? Bet they cost somewhere near what you paid for the bike on their own.

They probably did when new, yea.

It sounds deep and throaty, and can be obnoxiously loud at times. I like it though. Loud exhausts save lives Mr. Green

I love the look of twin pipes on bikes. Every bike above 400cc should have twin pipes as standard, just for cosmetic purposes.

I do like it, but I can't imagine it helps with keeping the weight down.

Almost all the weigh saved on the new GSXR thou was done by simply dropping the second can. That said, they almost always look cooler than a single (would love to see any examples where it doesn't).

So with that, Thumbs Up nice bike
