Well as the thread title says, we had to have our dog put down. Bit gutted but he was getting on for 12 years old and he was an English Springer Spaniel and they generally don't have a very long life.

The worst thing is, yes I'm quite gutted and feel a bit down but everyone else seems to have a bit more of an emotional reaction. I loved the poor bugger but I just don't seem to be overly emotional. Am I dead inside or are some people just like this?

I agree. My dog was put down in Feb at the age of 10. To be honest, I shed more tears leading up to it and the actual point where I made the decision, and possibly felt more relief afterwards. Hardly shed a tear after apart from a few occasions where there's a 'trigger'.

I can't say whether it gets easier with time, but you get used to dealing with it I suppose.

My cat of 17 years was put down last month, i actually cried quite a lot right up until the point where he went, haven't cried since, i knew it was the right thing to do for him.

Quite hard because i can always remember him being there, but people react differently, can't judge yourself about it.

I'm a bit pissed off that I wasn't even woken up to be told that we were taking him to the vets, so I couldn't even be there.

We still have the other dog, that's a fair bit younger. She's brightening us up a bit...not surprising seeing as she's an english springer too. Lol.

Reminds me of that film Marley and me. We had to turn it off for both me and my boyfriend where in tears. Well he was trying to hide his and being macho but I know he was near about to cry hence why he turned it off very fast when they where at the vet. Film needs banned. I have pets, my cats are old and i cant imagine taking them in if they had to have this done. Would kill me, I dont know how anyone can deal with it. Crying or Very sad Just gutting.

Why should a film be banned for showing a part of life, its just realism. Also surprisingly cut deep for what was mainly a big hollywood film. Although i do feel they should have advertised it better.

its one of those things people deal with differently
I've had to take 3 dogs to the vets to be put down as I would not see them suffer
my current Dog (German shepherd) is 12 y.o. next month and showing her age
she doesn't run as much as she used to and struggles to jump onto the bed these days
apart from that she is still healthy and has no major issues that come with GS's (hip dysplasia etc)
but I know the day will come when I have to take that "last walk" with her
and TBH I'm dreading it and most GS's don't live much past her age

I dread the day our wee doggies go, I seem to have become much more attached to these than previous ones, or maybe it just feels that way.

Our last dog died lying across my chest, my Mum was so upset she went back to work. Sounds harsh but I understood that she couldn't face it which was fine. I thought it would be better if the dog had some warmth or maybe knew some one she was familiar with was nearby so I lay her across my chest just below my chin.

I watched her eyes go cloudy as she went. I cried once later in the day. Some folk just aren't the crying type, I can't say what I'd do to be honest. I don't think you can really compare and contrast with emotions, everyone is different, does a Muslim woman care more than a western woman because she wails at the coffin as opposed to quietly weeping?

I do know it hits people in different ways though. People who don't have pets don't understand the kind of relationship you develop with them.

Sorry to hear about it in any case.

Your are not dead inside, it is just that it effects people in different ways. As has been said, it may be that it hits you at a later date or it may not. Either way it does not mean that you didn't care.

Sorry about the dog, but it is better to stop it's suffering.

Didn't think I'd care when my old yorkie died, but when she didn't come home from the vets it hit me and I had to quickly leave the room Sad Loved that little thing, didn't have the best life when a local tosser kicked her and ruined her leg (karma caught up with him and he died due to cancer a year or two ago Thumbs Up ). 16 years for a 3-legged yorkshire terrier wasn't too bad though I suppose.

I never cry. Not at films, funerals, the loss of pets, pain, frustration, nothing.

I think I have no soul.

Sorry for the loss, btw. Dogs are ace.

Everyone deals with grief or loss in their own way. Try not to over-analyse the way you feel, because there is no right or wrong way to grieve

R.I.P. Spanner Crying or Very sad

I still miss my old dog terribly and I have the Grottie to keep me company. I've never had to do the Vet Trip and know it's the hardest thing I will ever have to do, so I kinda feel a bit lucky in that respect.

Like others have said everyone deals with stuff differently and there's no reason to think that you're in any way 'lesser' because of the way you are/feel/show your emotions.

our dog got put down when i was 16.
It was going to be at a set time like death row, but i was at school at the time mid-exam.
Halfway through i look at the clock, say 'oh shit my dogs dead', and carry on with my exam.
Needless to say, i got a D. D for dog, D for dead. In biology no less.

Dogs are always saddest as they are more loyal than even the best of your human friends or family. I went back to uni the day after my dad died and though I was saddened, I barely cried.

On the other hand there is Sarah's cat, who came back to the house in distress and unable to breathe. The vet advised that it would probably be best to have him put down. We didn't and instead paid shitloads to stabilise him and make him comfortable (though the vets had the order to end his suffering should he deteriorate).
We thought he'd have a few days at best before taking him to the vets for the last time, and I actually cried for the little bastard. That was about 3 months ago though, he seems to have gotten a lot better now Laughing little shit.

Don't think I'd cope too well with the doggies. Thumbs Up
