Pan european ST1100's i find get a bit warm when in cities not going very far very fast so always fit a manual switch for the fan, simple earth to existing thermo switch wire via my new switch. Simple.
Did mates old pan, his new one he had done by garage who fitted replacement fan i sent him, as he lives 150 miles away.
Anyway, bumped into him in Heathrow yesterday, fk me
The garage monkey has been at it.
They have put a switch on, connected directly to the battery live one side and onto the live for the fan the other, as this won't have done anything at all they then connected the negative directly to earth. This means the fan now comes on at all times the ignition is on.
They said, "we've made it able to come on (via switch) when ignition is off to cool it better" WTF !!
The topping of this messy pie is that the monkey connected a new wire to the now defunct fan switch and the other end to earth via a ring terminal and a bolt
Can you believe a garage has charged good money to have a potential fire on his hands, i'd be in there screaming at them but he don't want to make a fuss ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse? Personally.. i cant see a problem? Apart from he could have done it himself rather than pay a garage? |
That's not how fan switches work though.
Fan switches earth the fan motor. The fan itself is "live" with the other end connected to the fan switch. When cool, the fan switch has a high resistance so the fan stays off. When hot, the fan switches resistance breaks down, it allows the fan motor to earth through the switch and it comes on.
Putting a switch in a positive wire running to the fan like they did is totally nonsensical, there is already a positive wire hardwired to the fan motor anyway. Presumably the difference being, their one doesn't have a fuse in it. The switch will do nothing at all useful, switching it wont turn the fan on.
Whatever incompetant mupped fitted it probably found this out and instead of fixing it, decided to permanantly ground out the fan motor (or worse, started randomly connecting wires together until the fan came on and left it like that). As stated, now the fan is on all the time, the fan switch is disconnected and the switch they've fitted allows a passer by to turn your fan on when the bike is parked (or allows the rider to accidentally leave it on).
What they should have done is run a wire through a switch from the negative side of the fan motor to earth. This would have given a switch allowing the rider to manually turn the fan on if desired but retained the normal function of the thermal fan switch.
There are a few electrical items on bikes that work like that with the item itself being live and the switch earthing it. The fan is one, the horn is another, also the neutral light and oil pressure lights usually.
If I know this, someone professing to be a motorcycle mechanic definately should. Whilst I don't necessarily think it's particularly dangerous (lack of fuse notwithstanding), it'll burn out his fan motor eventually, overcool his engine and it's just generally incompetant.
I would be having words with whoever did it and if there wasn't a minimum of an apology and full refund forthcoming, I would encourage naming and shaming. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. AHHH.. sorry i wasnt aware there were different ways of wiring.
Ive only used the live wire with a fuse and a switch attached to the + side of item and a direct earth from - of item as that works for me.
I wasnt aware the fan worked differently, my apologies |

I'm waiting for mate to take side panel off to take a pic of the earth connected to fan switch, that is a proper piece of total incompetence that i had to see to believe what he'd told me on the phone. ____________________ Nobby the Bastard: How yo tell the difference between the actual japanese and her just screaming because she's had live fish stuck up her arse?
