Sick of my netbook, too slow to use for messing around, too small to do work on! I'm now after a proper laptop, a 14" one maybe. Problem is, the smaller ones are over priced and have poor specs. Needs to be dual core (i3 would be nice...), have decent battery life and not cost a fortune. Probably would spend up to £500 on one... Any ideas or recommendations?

I was also considering trying a MacBook Pro, just for the crack. The 13.3" would be around £850 with discount (so I'm told, I have to phone up to check). Might seem pricey but Apple products have epic resale value, but the specs are very nice. Pretty tempting investment!

I will have to have a look around PC World and all that, I've trying searching HUKD but no deals stand out atm.

Thinking

Aye but it's 15.6"... bit too big tbh! There are plenty of bargain 15" lappys about.

I've just nipped along to PC World to have a play with a MBP and I'm sold on it to be honest Embarassed

DO NOT GET HP. After less than half a year mine couldnt even do counter strike 1.6 or facebook games without overheating and freezing. My friends have had the same problem, the quality is utter shit.
Second hand macbook pro is definitely what you want, when I sell my bike I'll also sell this piece of trash and do just that

Macbook Pro Very Happy

Go to an Apple shop and have a play. You can always run Windows if you must on it anyway.

Because I want to run VMWare smoothly, and some gaming on the move wouldn't go a miss.

Anyway, got a lovely shiny 13.3" MacBook Pro now Very Happy Love it, just getting the hang of OS X and finding replacements for my Windows apps. Got Win7 installed anyway, but the battery life plummets on Windows, I think it's because some of the power saving features aren't supported or something. The build quaility is nothing short of epic, all the little things amaze me... the vent and speakers are in front of the screen hinge for example. Multitouch trackpads are the future.

I have ICT hardware and networking plus have studied computer science at OU in spare time.

I would recommend the up and coming Acer, you need to catch produce as they are trying to establish a foothold in the market place.

If you are able to go for the discontinued acer 6930G or better still Acer 6935G which I have. I managed to pick a refurb up for £400, this was well over a grand when first released.

4 GIG DDR3, up to 2303 MB, 1 GIG dedicated Nvidia 9600M-GT turbo cache. 2.0 GHZ, BGN wireless, blue ray, full 1080 HD and subwoofer for great sound.

The only cheap laptop which runs all games nice and cool and quiet too, great for movies.

I had one of the Sony VAIO F series i7 Nvidia 240GT bla bla bla's £1,400, Load of crap, fan soundedlike a jet engine as it intermittently jumped to 2.9 GHZ but never ran anything smooth.
It was set to idle at 1.6GHZ. Stay away from all these i7's in laptops set to idle at 1.6GHZ.
I could have messed with the threading drivers and all that could coudn't be bothered. I couldn't even hear the Tv for the fan.

The Acer 6930G is a little inferior but great too.

Stick your own seagate or samsung hard dirve as well as windows 7 and it's lightning fast

So if you go for this make sure it's the 9600GT and not the cuba or GS cards. The GT is a hybrid SLI.
