CB250N ignition issues

Hi can anyone help me diagnose an ignition problem with my 1980 CB250N?
It has no spark at the spark plugs, there is power coming from the blue and white wires from the stator up to the CDI unit. There is no power coming from the two wires out of the CDI into the coil. I have put a known good CDI unit on and nothing changed.

Then the only other thing is the timing (Not likely) or the regulator rectifier and any breaks in the wire.

Reg/rec shouldn't bother it. As long as there is power in the battery, it ought to run.

I'd check the pickup coil on the rotor and the wiring to and from it.

Also, not sure how it's setup on that bike but possibly a malfunction with one of the idiot switches. Neutral light coming on? Killswitch in the on position?

Yeah timing and points on these, missed that one.
I have an XR400 with no battery but a regulator rectifier is fitted.
Just wondering how this bike is wired up!
If it's all wired up through the battery it and the regulator rectifier is bust it won't fire.
Also when you turn the ignition on do the lights and and other stuff work. Could even be the ignition barrel/dodgy conection.

It will. As long as the battery has some charge in it (needs a surprisingly small amount of charge actually).

As it happens. I don't think the CB250N is wired through the battery. Pretty sure they self-excite meaning you could remove both the battery AND the Reg/rec and it would still run.

Just as an experiment. Unplug the white on black wire from the CDI (seperate to the two connector blocks if I have the correct wiring diagram) and try it then. If this wire is earthed, the bike will not run.

thanks guys.
I have tried disconnecting the white/black wire from the CDI, still doesn't fire. Is this wire for the kill switch?

The bike is not wired through the battery, so don't need it to start, only to activate the starter motor.

Stinkwheel, do you have a wiring diagram electronically or is it in a manual? I have tried to download one so I can check which wire comes from the pick up. Can't find one online.

I am trying to get the bike ready to sell after 2 years of faithful service. Isn't it funny how they don't give you any grief until you want to sell them.

There was one for a CB400N in the wiring diagrams thread in the workshop section of this forum. As far as I know, this is exactly the same as the CB250N.

It was pretty thin on detail as to what each wire does though, just had them all connecting to a circle where the alternator is with no indication of their relationship to the various parts.

Yes, the white on black goes to the ignition and kill switch. Earthing it kills the spark.

So thought I would find them and post all associated links in the hope that a more positive person may narrow down the possibilities unlike your self it would seem.

If I'd noticed this a couple of weeks ago I'd could have sent one out with my sister.

What I can do at some point this weekend is scan the pages you need from my Haynes, if that would help?

I like this. Mine died on a run. Chatted to sim at Lesters about it and he said the same thing, I was like it cant be for varius reasons. Unit looked intact when we pulled it out. Change of CDi and clicky thingy did nothing. Change of the yellow stargate unit and it fired up first time.

I want to know why I took it apart after that...
