recently my girlfriends macbook pro has died, one of those silver 2008 models.
it just shut off and wont power up.
the internet has said it's likely to be the logicboard/motherboard.
having looked on ebay these are very expensive.
there are some repair services offered on ebay that can be quite cheap, just wondered if anyone has used one of these or has somewhere they'd recommend to go to besides the genius bar as that too looks like it could get very pricey.
thanks

Laptop 'repair' is like car & Bike repair, it's not actually fixing what's there, it's fitting new parts. So if the board is gone and it needs a new one they will fit a new one, charge you for labour along with a mark up on the board compared to where they bought it from (probably ebay). If it were mine i'd open it up and have a look inside. If a component is the cause buy a new one and give it a go. For all you know it might just turn out to be a faulty power switch!

yea i'm slowly coming round to it having to be like that. i'm more than confident about being able to do it myself should it come to it.
the only annoying thing is that this is the cheapest logic board i can find-
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-15-MacBook-Pro-2-4GHz-Logic-Board-MA896LL-A1226-/160490241237?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255df6bcd5

as you can imagine the price is hard to come to terms with.

I would suspect a power supply, internal fuse, hard disc, something like that over a logic board. I'm not saying it hasn't gone, i'm just saying its not the most likely thing and it's certainly the most expensive, so it should really be a final resort.

I'm willing to bet once it's opened up it will be full of dust.

i'v already had it opened up and that's how it's sat at the moment.
it's pretty clean really to be honest.
i am hoping it's something cheaper to replace but googling comes up with people saying it's likely to be the board from the symptoms.
only chance might be the battery or magsafe but i'm unsure.
will take it to a mates tomorrow who has the same model to try those bits.

Have a chat with Bofh5...he might have some answers for you.

In the old days (with Macs) there used to be a small hole next to the disk drive. We used to uncurl a paperclip, and poke it in the hole for a few moments, and it use to re-boot a seemingly crashed Mac.

Don't know if it will work with the new Macbook Pro's though. And if you try it and it doesn't work it's your own fault. Cool

I work for an Apple reseller. Logicboards are stupid expensive and we do mark them up allot! Best bet is to get one from from a good ebay seller.

Hi

Or take the Mac to pieces and sell the parts separately. It was quite profitable for my sister and her other half when a normal Macbook died on them.

All the best

I cannot believe someone was so gullible to actually buy a Macintosh

Hi

We have one (bought to try some iPhone stuff), and although I am no fan of Macs they are not too bad. Hideously over priced but there are some nice features (charging socket, track pad scrolling, etc) as well as some nasty ones (no delete key just back space, no separate buttons off the trackpad, just about impossible to swap between different instances of the same app).

All the best

Keith

Macs are good tools for music editing and purely graphic design. And if you are industry trained and have the same at home then it stops you getting lost in shortcuts.

And they have an amazing thing of saving back to the same place you were once, and doesn't hide things or save things that take ages to find, plus there aren't thousands of virus' waiting to attack you the moment you turn on.

Plus you can easily copy or borrow software from work and load it onto your mac at home with zero cost. Whereas with the pc laptop you have to beg borrow or buy software that will work with stupid VISTA.

They are however, expensive. That's why I personally opted for a Toshiba £250 laptop over a Mac £2k laptop.

The only good thing about mac's is the user interface. They are nice to use as they have focussed on 'touch & feel'. Their monitors are also awesome, especially on the laptops.

Screen is very nice but not sure the user interface is really that nice.

Yep, use it already but it is a pain and not even possible with one hand.

All the best

Well apple stuff in general has good UI. Ipad's and iphones are both better examples of this. The desktop OS isn't quite so good, but then it's designed to allow you to do more.
