Hello all, I've been a longtime lurker of these forums, today decided to join as I really need some help!

The situation is I really need a bike ASAP, I need it in order to commute to my new job (5 days a week 6 miles there, 6 miles back), without one I don't think I can even take the job. The issue I have is that I have very little money as in £100 really lol. This new job is triple my current salary!
now the only way I can get a moped at such short notice and limited money to spend on one, is via finance, now looking at all the options it seems that they only offer finance on Chinese bikes.. I've read and read and read about how bad Chinese bikes are so I've ruled out lexmoto and pulse already as they have waaay to much negative reviews.
I was wondering would an AJ beany better as these seem to get mediocre reviews (I couldn't find many tbh) the specific model I'm looking at is the AJS A9 Flight 125 if I got a year out the bike with no issues I'd laugh tbh as I probably only need it for a year but I'm too unsure, but then again my options are already really limited.

For a piddling six miles why not get a cheap bicycle to tide you over till you can afford a motorcycle?

Thing is I finish at night and I think it would be too much on a night to finish work at 3am and ride a bike home I did actually consider this

You're attempting to be fussy about what bike you may want to buy with only £100 to offer, I've seen it all. Personally I'd say you dreaming about (a) getting a bike at that price (b) getting a runner at that price. As above you can have a bike.. just one without an engine.

I'm not %100 sure but I've read multiple posts stating that finance requires fully comp insurance in the T&C's, so there's that to factor in.. the most expensive type of insurance, and you only have £100 in total? I don't think you've even realized bikes require fuel and consumables (chains, chain lube, tools etc) to maintain them. Although I get the sense that upon reading "if I got a year out the bike with no issues I'd laugh tbh" you just want to run something into the ground.

Also "triple my current salary!" you say? Thinking .. you'll be able to afford one soon enough.

With a £100 bike, you're likely to be walking some or all of the way to or from work. Wink

Bicycle with a set of lights.

Even then the bicycle won't be that good! But 6 miles cycling is nothing.

6 miles on a pushrod is nowt. You'll barely get the exhaust warm at that kind of distance.

I've worked 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm and also 7-7 days/nights but that's a strange shift pattern if you finish at 3am. Anyway, I just remembered something about scooters for the needy and found these:

OK, back up a bit.

Before you get on a motorcycle or scooter, you need:

1) A driving license with provisional category A motorcycle entitlement.
2) To complete a Compulsory Basic Training course. You'll need to book one, and it'll cost in excess of £100.
3) Insurance and at least a helmet. You may get a helmet thrown in with a new scooter, but insurance is your problem. It'll cost over a hundred, possibly multiple hundreds if you're in a pikey area. You may get an option to pay monthly, but you'll be paying a hefty amount extra over the year in return.

And you absolutely should try and get some sort of security, even if it's just a big padlock to put through the brake disc. Oxford products are cheap and readily available and about as useful as putting a "PLEASE DO NOT STEAL KTHNX" note on the bike, so try and get anything other than those.

Once you've got all that done or in progress, then you can think about getting a bike or scooter.

I have no idea where you're getting the idea that you will only get finance from a Chinese seller. Here you go:

https://www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/range/scooter/vision-2014/offers/finance.html

£99 down, then 3 years at £58.40 a month.

If you're under 18 then you should not be allowed to enter into any finance contracts for either the bike or pay-monthly insurance, but it's routinely ignored. If it's not then you'll have to find a guarantor or someone else to take out the finance for you.

If you do go down the Chinese route than I'd suggest that it won't make a blind bit of difference what badge is on. It'll be a random Chinese model built down to a budget. You might as well go for whatever's cheapest, from the friendliest seeming dealer.

If you absolutely need to travel right now then get on Gumtree or FreeCycle and bag a bicycle because you're not going to be on a motorcycle or scooter by Monday, at least not legally.

At 3am, I'd want something with a kickstart, or something I could bump start. Not a ped (EDIT: apparently some ped's do have kickstarts, see below).

Not heard that personally, I know people who have bikes on finance on TPO policies.

But yeah, £100 will cover the CBT, and then none of your gear/insurance etc. Sometimes new bike deals come with £100 or something worth of accessories, so you might be able to get a cheap lid as part of the deal. As Rogerborg says, Honda offer finance (as does every other manufacturer), in fact I think they prefer it to cold hard cash.

Anyhoo we're still in fantasy land, £100 buys you a pretty $hit new bicycle from Halfords, maybe something half decent if you shop around. £50 gets you a pretty good probably stolen bike off gumtree, which might be your best option Confused

So you only need a bike you can secure with a deposit and insure for £100?

Also a cautionary tale (re finance), someone at work bought a brand new Honda PCX, rode it to work once, then someone set it on fire outside where he lived. After his excess he was down £600 Sad

I wont entertain your idea since I'm not unrealistic about obtaining a motorbike for £100 but if you insist on being able to do so then.. do you have and or have the money for;

- Security
- Fuel Money
- Consumables
- Insurance

or have you overlooked or want to include that in your £100 as well?

Not really sure why. You'll have quiet roads and so long as you've got good lights and good clothing you'll be well seen.

Get a loan?

Go through zopa, no early repayment fees, on triple your previous salary then the minimum you're getting must be around 36K? You'll pay off a small loan in no time.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Then you've got your £99 deposit, so get down to Honda and see if they'll offer you finance on a Vision or a PCX. Ask about insurance as well.

You could save a few £££ a month on a Lexmoto/AJS but it'll depend on the interest rate on the finance. Insurance is likely to be higher, and where it'll sting you is when you try to sell it on and get nothing but "Two staffies and a go on me sister" offers.

FYI, my Yamaha Jog R 50 had a kickstart.

Useful on occasion.

If you have the credit rating to get finance for buying the bike you don't want, you have the credit rating for a secured loan to buy the bike you do want.

I'd suggest if it's a job for triple your salary, you can't afford NOT to take it, even if you have to walk there and back for the first few weeks (so an hour and a half at walking pace.)

A would again suggest a bicycle is your friend though. If you have a local bike re-cycling cooperative, you'll get a fairly decent, re-conditioned second hand bike for well under £100. Six miles is less than a half-hour cycle. Suck it up 'till your first pay cheque.

You're missing the key point, this guy wants to triple his salary with effort or sacrifice.

You're moaning about 6 miles on a pushbike?

That can be done in less that 30 mins.

You're not going to be able to afford a motorbike/ped and insurance for £100.

You will need a pushbike or get lifts of people or even walk.

After your first paycheck you can then consider getting a motorbike.

6 miles is nothing. Easily walkable, or push iron. Wait until you get paid if you're getting teh mega bucks.
