The feeding of the 5000.....

No, not the nice fairy story about Jeebus, some loaves and some fishes, or the classic 1978 punk album by Crass, but what's going down in the Gixer household today.

Currently cooking:

1 x chicken - in the slow cooker, to be used for sarnies etc

1 x chicken - salt and pepper crust, in the oven for dinner.

Assorted prepped veg to accompany said salt & pepper chicken.

Small portion of sausages and mash with peas and gravy - for little Harry for lunch

1 x vat of spaghetti soice (bolognaise) for tomorrow night's dinner.

There's 6 of us in the Gixer household, at times it's like feeding a small army!

So, what's cooking in your kitchen?

chicken with garlic/herb/seasoning rub in the oven.

celeriac and potatoes in a pan, waiting to be mashed.
swede/carrots in a pan, waiting to be turned into mash.
cabbage in a pan.
several cut-up-potatoes in a pan of water, to be semi cooked then put into a roasting tin for roasties...om nom nom.
extra pan for gravy.

My sunday dinner could consist of meat and roasties.


Got 5 people eating in the house today. After a trip with my brother to sheffield in an hours time.

I can cook, but often I'm lazy and live on hot dogs.

Today, I made some nice risotto. Rather impressed I was with my efforts too. Nothing fancy, just short grain rice, beef mince, salt, ground dried chilli and water, but I cooked it gently using a diffuser. Cookers tend to have the lowest setting being a bit of a rolling boil rather than a gentle simmer, this kills flavours, but the diffuser sits under the pan and reduces the heat so food cooks more gently.

Mostly been eating pizza's all weekend, as Tesco have a 3 for £4 deal on at the moment. I'm quite happy with that.

Been doing a lot of stir frying in recent weeks after everyone raving about how quick and easy it is. Quite an impressive step for me. Pretty pleased with the results, although its probably boring by most peoples standards as I will use the fewest ingredients possible to maintain the simplicity.

Good that you can just add as much 0 calorie veg to the pan as you want to make it fill you up. Which is the biggest problem with the ready meals I usually eat. Leave you unsatisfied a lot of the time.

Mildly annoying how short the shelf life of chicken is. Especially if you are only cooking for 1. Having to buy expensive small portions.

Similarly, I'm lazy and cba to cook just for myself.

When I'm on my own I've lately gotten into making up a big pot of rice and then having it for a few nights on the trot with, maybe, fresh raw veg chopped up and stirred into it - plus or minus a tin of tuna or red salmon.

What I like about living on my own is that I can have nice decent quality things (e.g., FrU passionfruit mousse) in my fridge which I can then be sure that when I want one, there will be one there.

I just had a whole carton of pesto and pine nut pasta bow salad, followed by a Dr Oettker Raspberry and Rhubarb fruit mousse.

If the Beefcake is coming round, sometimes I make the effort, but invariably just as I manage to concoct everything in perfect timing*, he's either impossibly late and I have to turn everything off so it doesn't burn, and it dries out ...

OR he gets there on time but we get distracted drinking wine and molesting each other ... and it all dries out.

He mentioned once that he doesn't remember having a hot meal at my house, which secretly rather put my nose out of joint, as it would have BEEN hot, delicious and perfect (like I had planned HOURS in advance for it all to be perfect!) ... if he hadn't been late and/or decided to grope me on the sofa instead.

Really I need to employ a discreetly-disappearing chef when I'm expecting him, I think.



*and manage to co-ordinate my hair, make-up and studiously disarranged clothing.

No need to cook for a few days: yesterday I went to a colleague's house for a Filipino meal, and as their tradition dictates, I was packed off home with enough leftovers to feed an army. Or me, for a week.
