This is why!! Does anyone remember when my engine went pop? Well i kept it anyway for spares for my new race bike and needed to get some bits off the clutch, after taking the cover off and all the bits i needed, i decided to remove the oil strainer just to see what it looked like as i had never done it before when servicing, just laziness i guess.

Well here is what it SHOULD look like:

https://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee125/carlosamillios/100_1357.jpg

And this is what i found when i pulled it out:

https://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee125/carlosamillios/100_1356.jpg

Safe to say that it needed doing! Hadnt checked it in probably 18 months, from now on i will make sure it gets done every time i change the oil.

I very much doubt this had anything to do with my cam bolts shearing and flat spotting cam lobes but it cant of been very helpful for the engine either.

Moral of the story? DONT cut corners!

Hi

Mmmm, wouldn't like to bet on a long engine life with a tiny strainer like that being seriously blocked.

All the best

Keith

How often are you supposed to clear out the oil strainers?

I've never done it before Shocked , presumably it requires removing the sump?

on my gs, I can take the strainer out without taking the sump off. Just 3 bolts holding a plate on the bottom of the sump.

Presume the CBR125.

Surprised they are not going bang regularly if they have a tiny strainer like that.

All the best

Ah, I assumed it was for a larger CBR as he said he was borrowing parts for his track bike. I didn't think I needed to regularly clear out an oil strainer on my 600 CBR.

The YBR has one as well, have never bothered to check it either. You need to remove the clutch cover which involves removing the starter motor, brake pedal bits and footrests. Pain in the backside indeed. Might do now next time I change the oil... Paraffin and a toothbrush should clean it out.

Incidentally, how many miles has the OP's bike got and how often was the oil changed?

It may well have escalated the wear of those bits because oil would have a harder time getting to them with the strainer in that condition.

The mileage was around 30,000 miles when the engine went, oil changed every 2/3000 miles.

You may only have a filter bud, this was from a CBR125.

Not normally.

The oil filter is after the oil pump, and catches most of the small debris. The strainer is there to catch the major debris before it has a chance to get to the pump and damage it. But if the strainer gets blocked then the oil pump can't get any oil to pump around.

All the best

Does a Bandit 600 have one as far as any one knows?

The 1200 does I think, but cant find anything about the 600.

Didnt think it did as it has a filter but this thread has me worried Neutral

I would think that ANY 4 stroke engine will have some sort of strainer/mesh on the oil pickup to stop any large hard bits being sucked into the pump.
certainly all cars have them and lots of vw petrols suffer from engine seizures from it becoming blocked too.
I think my old Hyosung 125 had a plate that came off to get at it easily.
Thumbs Up
