I've had enough of dealing with my mother's PC running vista always spitting its dummy out then shitting itself and dieing.
I just tried to sort out the Wi-Fi on the printer so it stops disconnectin the net every time you unplug, plug the usb cable into it.

But now after it failed to do anything and then failed to boot up 3 times its now trying to repair problems...

Enough is enough, no one runs vista anymore unless they have a brain hemorage or a frontal labotomy, its time to run Windows 7 by far the greatest OS i've ever used.

My question is, what will i need to find in terms of drivers? can i use the Vista drivers to run windows 7?
If so is there anything i need to do or change?

Generally Vista drivers work in 7.

Windows 7 seems to just work.

I have installed xp countless times and every time I have to go through the drivers installing them and making everything work.

When I put 7 on my pc, it found all but one driver once I had internet connectivity.

Should still update drivers. If not then download individual drivers. If it doesn't say windows 7 just use vista ones.

Make sure you get the correct type, 32/64bit.

7 Is nearly as bloated and slow as Vista, but so far everything seems to work.

disagree completely with that statement. win7 is far from perfect, but 7 runs fast on my laptop and stays fast unlike MS predecessors. XP was the worst. as soon as you put a few programs on, then it would frag the hard drive and take over a minute to load up. vista was slow, but it managed to not get much slower. it did release all of the memory back to the RAM when you closed programs unlike XP.
win7 is my favorite OS at the moment simply because all my programs are windows based, and there are not quite the linux alternatives for every piece of software that i use.

Back on topic: virtually everything on win7 works straight out of the box. drivers are rarely a problem. win7 has a much friendlier and safer user interface and generally will not let you kill your computer.
as for getting a copy of 7. can quite easily be found on any torrent or warez sites pre-activated. if it isn't activated i have a loader which has never failed to activate windows on any laptop/pc/mac. PM me if you want a link, i think it is called windows loader

Vista is shit, it has always been shit, when it came out i predicted it would be shittier than a hobo's 15yr old boxers since he's had diarrhea every 2 years for months at a time.
Windows ME is better than vista...

7 Boots to desktop faster than vista, but once it's there the hard disk keeps thrashing about over a minute and the whole OS is still slow to use. From clicking a program to run to actually getting it takes my PC the same time on vista as it does on 7, so unless you restart your PC a lot i find the 2 to be about the same speed.

My judgement may well be tainted by running linux as my main OS which boots faster than either and once it's on the desktop it's done. Zero hard drive activity. Programs load about 3 times quicker too. My mates mac i used was a damn site quicker too.

Speed wise i'd rate them:

Linux: 9/10
Mac: 7/10
7: 3/10
Vista: 2.5/10

So yeah, compared to vista 7 is faster by a reasonable amount. But then in the grand scheme of things that's like saying compared to a shit a fart doesn't smell that bad.

I'd recommend 7 over Vista any day though as they seem to have toned down on the:
Do you want to view or run this program?
Are you sure that you wish to run this program?
WARNING a program is attempting to run! Allow?
The following program is attempting to access the internet. Allow?

That stuff just made me want to kick the monitor through,

*Edit*

I know this is no use to someone trying to decide between windows 7 and Vista, but like we all said, go for 7. Anyway i thought it might be nice to put some numbers to my feelings on how slow even 'fast' windows is so here we go...

Boot time.

Windows 7
time to mouse: 25
time to desktop: 38
time to google: 52

Linux
time to mouse: 20
Time to desktop: 22
time to google: 28

Windows 7 does get you to the desktop quicker than vista. It also gives you the mouse earlier so you feel like it's almost there quite early on. But loading a program once it gets to the desktop goes slowly as the PC is actually still loading. Network connections get made quickly enough for them not to slow down an internet page load.

Linux gives you a blank screen with no feedback on load progress until the hard disk goes silent and the desktop appears. Programs load at normal speed, but there is a noticeable hang time between the browser opening and the page loading. I suspect this is waiting for the internet connection.

System load showing system usage after boot, then after running and closing a bunch of programs.

Windows 7
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/win-before.png
Boot

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/win-after.png
Afterwards

840mb / 980mb

Linux
https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/before.png
Boot

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/after.png
Afterwards

460mb / 500mb

So windows 7 is still slow, system heavy and hogs memory after programs have stopped running. Yeah it's better than Vista by a big, but it's got a long way to go. Linux isn't even optimised towards speed but it makes microsofts claims of complex and advanced optimisations for speed look laughable
