'Tis the latest Ewan McGregor movie I've seen and I thought it was rather good.

I thought it would be good. It was a pile of wank.

I read the book then watched the film.

I think the film caught the sparse remoteness of the house in its island setting quite well although, why did Euan McGregor have to put on that wierd Michael Caine London accent; it was just strange and unnecessary.

They also managed to catch the wee subtle points from the book, when Pierce Brosnan arrived on the plane, even although there was no one there to greet him (except his entourage) he stopped at the top of the steps and waved as if the terminal was thronged, that came straight from the book and was a nice touch to keep in.

Also Richard Rycart was (to me anyway) an obvious representation of Robin Cook if he'd lived.

I liked it, it was very of the moment.

What he said. The ending especially was cheap.

The ending was true to the book, the only difference being Brosnan's character was shot instead of blowing up.

I'm always interested to know how people prefered a film to end. I thought the ending was reflective of reality, I think its quite brave to give a film an ending not in keeping with the public's desires.

Thumbs Up

Killing somebody because of a hidden message in a book that amounted to the square-root of SFA? Book or film, it was lame beyond belief. Straight out of Enid Blyton in fact. Laughing

Mmm...

Perhaps you missed the jist of it.

If you haven't seen the film or read the book and want to; I think this is what they call a 'spoiler' below, so don't read any further.

The premise is that Adam Lang was recruited by the CIA while he was a student, he had no interest in politics and lied about when he joined the Labour party. As it transpired it was his wife who was recruited and she subsequently placed herself by his side to 'steer' UK policy in favour of US interests.

As an idea, I don't think the wife of the Prime Minister (and someone who he relied on heavily for advice) being a CIA mole (the USA supposedly being an ally) could be described as SFA.

I think that would be quite a serious issue if it was ever the case in reality.

Thumbs Up

It was the premise of him hiding it in a silly little message in his book, especially when the message amounted to SFA (proof? Come again?). And after the author was dead anyone could have claimed the message wasn't from him, so why kill the guy with the type-written manuscript?

I believe it's what's called, in literary circles, a weak plot.

Confused I thought the plot was pretty good; the 'ghost' supposedly chosen because he was pretty lame ending up spotting the hidden message by the previous author, an author that was killed for seeing that the Prime Minister's whole background had been fudged to hide CIA ties...

Why that's somehow amazingly unbelievable and too far for a film plot I fail to understand.. Confused

I'm amazed that the author of the hidden message didn't just write letters and/or make phone-calls to the press. Rolling Eyes

It was a lame plot and everything based upon it very tedious. How on earth it was accepted by a publisher, never mind made into a film, beggars belief. But then it's all about knowing the right people in the industries. They call it 'glad handling', old-boy network corruption. That's why talented writers get rejection-slips while the likes of Jeffery Archer can write utter shite and big-money marketing throws its weight behind it ("Get yer polished turds here!").

I've lost count how many times the newspapers have sent 'War & Peace' to big publishing houses and received rejection-slips in return.

I think you missed the subtle points.

The original author used the obvious and childish code because he was desperate and knew he was in danger, it was also obvious in the film that McAra (who put the message in) was fiercely loyal to Adam Lang; if he'd went to the press it would've destroyed them both.

In the end he did try to get in touch with Richard Rycart (the ex-home or foraign minister Lang sacked) and it got him killed.

Finally, the evidence was coming out in relation to Lang ordering the SAS to pick and hand over the four suspects whe were subsequently tortured.

Did you actually watch the film?

Wink

PS: You did well to not let the tin foil hat/up the establishment rhetoric intrude until the post above. Well done. Wink

It was an amiable way to pass an hour and half. What was undoubtedly shit was McGregor's accent in it.

Of course, no one ever uses hidden messages in publications.

Very Happy
