starting off on a CG125

hey guys,

I'm planning on buying a bike in September/October for when I'm 17 and at the moment I'm pretty convinced I'm going to get a CG125 because they're cheap and reliable.

what I'd like to know is what prices i can expect to pay for one in said months, how often to change oil etc

basically i'm just asking for any hints and tips.

I have seen a 1999 model for £600 with only 12k mileage and full MOT, should i buy this one or wait it out and see if i can pick up something better in the autumn?

i'd go for that,i payed 600 for a 1992 one and its a mess now

oil changes are usually every 1k miles

I would go for that too, mine was a shade under £400 and although it sailed through an MOT I have spent more than £200 in parts for the thing...

Nice to ride though and peanuts to insure/tax/fuel.

As Rob says, change the oil every 1K, check it every week and a new plug every 3rd oil change and it will run forever, only holds 1Litre of 10/40 so cheap to change but need to keep an eye on the level.

If that one's in good condition it's reasonably priced imo.

Regular oil changes, get a Haynes and some tools.
And don't forget to keep the chain lubed and adjusted!

i.e. Do POWDER all the time and you'll be alright with a CG.
Petrol (enough?)
Oil (Enough oil?)
Water (not applicable to 99 CG i'll admit, but good habit to get into remembering).
Drive (chain - lubricated?/adjusted correctly?)
Electrics (Indicators, horn and lights all working?)
Rubbers (Tyres got the correct pressures? No nails/debris in them?)

As a side note, I was in Halfords looking for a torque wrench for the CG's head bolts, they didn't have one suitable, but all the socket sets are half price for the bank holiday

All lifetime warranty too, for the oil filter gauze cover you need a 24mm socket, that doubles as the drain plug on mine.

This looks like a pretty good deal, considering it's the front disc version. I've ridden drum and disc versions and the disc version is much better all round.

Echo the above poster, keep in mind £850 might seem a "lot", but front disc brake will be a lifesaver (I have the old CG, the drum brake sometimes feels like you'd do better dragging your heels). Kinda wish I'd gotten the newer model just for that now.

CGs are awesome cz they accept the standard learner neglect.

Get yourself a haynes manual, and make sure you stock up on mirrors, indicators, and clutch and brake levers. i went through those quicker than i went through socks!

my mates just bought a 2000 one for £550 with 12 months tax n MOT

for 700 you could be getting a newer one with electric start,keep looking
