Ok people.
I have had an opportunity come to me to write for an online magazine based in Wales.
The online mag is being developed by a very skilled, veteran gamer who thinks there is a bit of a gap in the market as far as he’s concerned.
Now whether or not this is the case he is skilled as a programmer, web designer and he has written articles for a few respected websites and magazines.
So I’m giving this a go, he asked if I could write something after hearing about me through a friend. I’ve been with games since birth, always played them always loved them so really, with this knowledge and history i think, why not.
Now I know there’s a lot of competition for this sort of thing, which is why I’m firstly going to write with the intent it is going to be a very different read to your normal review/article you might see in a website or publication.
I’ve been told that nowadays if you do this sort of thing you’ll be asked ‘where’s your website’ which is where I am right now. I don’t have one. So if any of you have knowledge/experience of this sort of thing, I’d be willing to listen. Thumbs Up

Why would you need a website to write an article ? It's going to be shown on the online anyway.

I mean as a kind of launch pad for your work.
To show how much you’ve put in i guess, how your ‘look’ is perhaps.

Google Zero Punctuation for a different type of review, I can't get enough of those.

But you don't have any work yet?

Surely it's a chicken and the egg type scenario?

My tip, if you're writing an article and reviews, join the NUJ (National Union of Journalists) You may end up needing protection and advice should you end up on the wrong side of large companies.

I wouldnt worry about that. You submit an article. If he likes it, he includes it. If he wants another one, he asks for one. As this is a new thing that may or may not bring in money, and you havent done paid work before, I think you shouldnt ask for money, although say you'd like to do more articles and if the things starts making money, then articles at that stage you might charge him for.

Thats the way I'd handle it anyway.

Another point of view is that people only value things they pay for, and I can see the sense in that, but I think you want to build a relationship with him and create a body of work with him.

I bet your threads on here will get read by more people than your computer game article. Pull out some of your longer posts on here if you want examples of your work. I'm sure ages ago, you did some threads that were a bit of a feature. Cant remember what.

Does anyone actually read whole game reviews? If I hear about a game and wan to know if it's any good, I'll go to 3 different game review sites (gamespot, IGN, and another) and see what the average overall score is, if it's above 8 then I'll download it Smile. Can't see the point in reading 6 pages of some geeks frothing at the mouth about how the camera angles aren't to his liking (probably fuelled by lack of coitus).

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 15 years, 79 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
