How to deal with oil?

Riding to the shops today I came across a stretch of road that was completely covered in oil. I have no problem going around the small patches, but here it had obviously burst out a car and then been driven up the road on the wheels of vehicles following, so that it was unavoidable to ride over - and there was a lot of it. The first time I went to brake the back wheel locked, and any time I was cornering I felt the wheels sliding. In the end, once I'd got onto a clean stretch of road, I had to pull over and do a burnout to clean my tyres. I just wondered what's the best way to deal with oil, either to avoid it or to get it off your tyres straight away. And should I be reporting this to the council, and if so - how?

Report it to either the local council or the fire brigade.

Warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush is best, failing that it will scrub off pretty quickly but do take it easy when cornering.

If it is that much on the road and you can't avoid it then yes, you will have to ride the waves and just hope. Had it last night at a round-a-bout, back wheel slid about an inch or two, no big deal, you get used to it.

I've had to slowly ride the bike along the pavement before after encountering an oil slick in York town centre, couldn't even confidently stand up on it.

It was a big crane that had decided to shit its hydraulic system onto the road. It was stopped about half a mile further on due to steering failure. I guessed the police would find out in due course so I didn't report it.

There was a big fuckoff slick of it down lane 2 of the Southbound Aston Expressway this morning. Something coming from the A38/erdington in lane 1. Noticed it in lane 2 after nearly changing moving into it. I think it's time for a bit of a rethink on how they actually manage this, most people ain't got a clue how to report it. And a slide out at 50 on the expressway in rush hour traffic would have caused all kinds of hell...

There is a good stretch of road near me. Come out of a 30 to nsl, no traffic because it is fairly quiet round there. Goes downhill and a nice S bend which I can pin it through (65-70). Only recently got the balls to actually go full throttle through there.

Just after S bend it goes up then downhill very quickly so one day pinning it through and I see rainbow. The whole road covered in Diesel. Just loosened up my arms and prayed. Didn't brake or accelerate, just stayed doing near top speed. Pretty damn scary.

A couple of months back in RiDE there was a thing about this. Saying if there is mud, loose gravel, oil etc on the road, dont do anything. Dont lean, dont accelerate, dont brake, dont pull in your clutch just do nothing. Apparently mud wears off in like 2 to 3 brake lengths, oil in 5-7 I think it was. Who knows.

But if the road is actually covered, I think you'd best stop before you get there and push, thats what I'd do!
