Hi All

There have been many discussions about fitting Mirrors with integrated indicators in them and specifically lots of discussions about GSXR mirrors as they seem to be the most common, a lot of people have bought these...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/led%20indi.JPG

I think the above are nice but not realy to my liking so I prefer the GSXR mirrors. I bought a pair off ebay for £22.50...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/gsxr.JPG

They are INCREDIBLE quality, honestly the stem the mounting points, the mirror glass, the housing just the whole thing is really well made, the stem is solid aluminium the housing is plastic but you really need to feel them to see the quality. So a thumbs up to Suzuki for them!

Anyway, I spent literally days trying to figure out how to mount them as you can’t mount them straight on as the angle of the stem is a lot lower so your mirrors would be behind your bars if you did.

Then I got knocked off my bike, went down on the left hand side and smashed the mirror and broke the clutch lever but no other damage, the car driver was a good looker so all was forgiven (my fault really Sad

The mirrors I had on at the time were these....

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RIGHT-HAND-MIRROR-CBR600-VTR1000-SP1-SP2-VFR800-HORNET_W0QQitemZ270342643251QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item3ef1ad5e33&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Cheap cbr mirrors from china, do the job and fit perfectly.

However this turned out to be a good thing, when the mirror was smashed I discovered the way the mirror housing was fixed to the stem....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11470_medium.JPG

I have no idea how they are assembled as there is no way of accessing that nut with the glass in place but there is also no way of accessing that nut without breaking the glass Sad

So....

Step by step guide to do this.....

1. Purchase Cheap CBR mirrors....

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RIGHT-HAND-MIRROR-CBR600-VTR1000-SP1-SP2-VFR800-HORNET_W0QQitemZ270342643251QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item3ef1ad5e33&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

2. Purchase GSXR mirrors....

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Suzuki-GSXR-K6-K7-600-750-Mirrors-Indicators_W0QQitemZ280384435809QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycle_Parts?hash=item414836f661&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

You will find a pair a lot cheaper if you look! Don't get any chinese copies they are crap!

3. Take cbr mirrors and put them in plastic sandwich bags (2x), seal the bag, then take a hammer and smash the mirror Smile

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11468_medium.JPG

4. Get rid of the glass safely and you now have the cbr mirror with no glass, within the mirror housing you will find this...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11470_medium.JPG

Undo the nut with a 8mm spanner and you will have the following components....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11472_medium.JPG

5. Get rid of everything apart from the nut, then get a large washer to fit the bolt on the stem....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11475_medium.JPG

6. Now leave that and move to the new mirror...
Remove the indicator (held in with one screw in the front) disconnect it ...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/DSC_0578_medium.JPG

you will find within the housing 2 Bolts...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/DSC_0583_medium.JPG

remove both of these (9mm I think) They were very stiff on mine so do require some persuasion but you will do well with an offset spanner as the angle is quite difficult....

https://product-image.tradeindia.com/00241888/b/0/Shallow-Offset-Ring-Spanner.jpg

7. Once the bolts have been removed, the stem will fall off and you will have the below bits....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/DSC_0591_medium.JPG

Chuck 'em away!

8. Take the new GSXR mirror and the CBR mirror stem on the mirror housing where the stem was you will find several holes...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11473_medium.JPG

Fit the CBR stem into the big middle hole and put the washer and the Nut on from the inside of the mirror housing....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11476_medium.JPG

9. Do up the nut as tightly as you feel right, no matter how tight you make it it will still spain round when forced but it won't when riding so don't worry.

Test fit it to the bike to get the position of the mirror on the stem correct for riding, tighten the nut a bit more Smile

Then take a 5mm drill bit and drill a hole on the bottom side of the mirror just where the stem joins it...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11478_medium.JPG

10. Take the in GSXR stem, as it still has the cable in it you need to remove this. however the connectors will not fit through the lower end of the stem so you have to cut one of them off, don't worry which as they are both identical.

11. Push the cable with outer cover through the hole you drilled with the connector on the inside of the mirror...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11480_medium.JPG

12. Now the nasty bit....
As the cable doesn't pass through the stem you need to drill a hole in the fairing...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11484_medium.JPG

An after though I had was to drill the hole in the middle of the mirror mount as there is open space there...

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11482_medium.JPG

I don't think it looks too bad either way but it would be ideal to have the wire running through the stem.

13. Connect the indicator and fit it into the mirror housing and fit the whole thing to the bike. feed the cable through the hole in the fairing....

https://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/SDC11486_medium.JPG

And connect it by splicing into the existing indicator cables with tap splice connectors....

https://www.allproducts.com/manufacture13/uta/18-quick_spice_a.jpg

or if you are getting rid of the stock indicators then just stick some bullet connectors on the new indi's and hook 'em up!

14. Sit back and watch....

Well thats it ! ! !

Hope this has helped someone.

I think I might get hold of some flush mount indi's to get rid of the stock ones and also give more side visibility.

They do look less bright in the video than in person but if I disconnect the stock ones then they go almost 3 times as bright.

As the cheap mirrors I smashed to do this are actually advertised as CBR600 mirrors I am pretty certain all of the above will also apply to you cbr owners who may want to do this.

Mods to do...
flush indicators and add running lights into the new mirrors. I bought some electoluminescent wire as I thought I could coil it up inside the mirror as space is really tight but it just isn't bright enough so I might get a couple of the new style LED's....

https://www.phoenixautobulbs.co.uk/images/Ign-Pair-501-LED-Sidelights.jpg

I have one mounted in the headlight as a running light and it is really bright. I just need to figure out how to mount it into the mirror.

Cheers guys!

Rich

Fantastic write up, must admit, very cool Thumbs Up

A bit unorthodox like, and if I was doing it myself I'd find ways to get around drilling the fairing etc.

But cool nontheless. Thumbs Up Karma

That's a pretty tidy job you've done there, and it's a nicely leftfield sort of mod. Cracking writeup, too...
I like it Thumbs Up Very Happy

Would you be able to get some shrink warp maybe, to cover the stem and wire?

hi all, i was looking at doing something similar to my bandit gsf 650 sa k9, and there are non that fit fine etc

but after reading this it has got me thinking if i could do somthing similar? what you could've done is fed the wire through the stem of the mirror, and drilled a tine hole at the bottom of the stem and fed it through there maybe?then there would be no hanging wire?

just a thought, not sure the bandit mirror stems are hollow to do this

any thoughts on that?

good show though mate, glad others are coming up woth ideas Smile

It looks a bit gash with the cable running outside the stem, and drilling the fairing Pale
But it actually looks ok as the end product, nice mod - and enjoyed the detailed write up.
So do they vibrate like a mo fo above 50ish like they do on the gixxer??

people like me with 9 points, gotta have a good check round before doing naughties.

Also just handy for lane changes and such. I tried riding without them for few days on the cbr but found it a bit un nerving. Maybe i just like to know whats going on behind

That's a very good writeup and was looking at doing this on my Blade since my flushmounts don't often get seen during the daytime and people just insist on pulling out on me.

That was until I found These

But your post gave me the idea to get something like that sorted. Shame the wire couldn't go through the mirror stem since other than that, the gixxer mirrors look so much better!
