What is it with these things then?

They seem to be creeping onto the brake fluid pots of bikes for the last few years now, here's an example of Craig23's (shamelessly nicked from the photo section - sorry Craig!) but he's not the only one they're all over the place...

https://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/whers84/DSC00582.jpg

I'm not complaining at all but to be honest I'm used to seeing them halfway up Michael Jordan's forearm, or more recently Jamaican style one's wrapped around the wrist of some floppy haired, bedraggled, moody eyed Indie band guitarist.

Michael perspires and wipes his baldy forehead and slams hoops. Indy Band Boy never uses it as far as I'm aware but probably utilises its' elasticity and keeps his Bus Fare underneath it strapped securely to his wrist. This leaves brake fluid pot, does it sweat, glow or perspire? Does it need BFH just in case its' brotherly components stop working and they can all get a lift home on the No.57? Have I lost the plot? Can someone enlighten me?

I believe it's to keep the fluid at a constinant tempreture when racing. Can see no sensible use on the road.

So, let me get this straight a small piece of elasticised cotton (79p from JJB Sports) that is more commonly known for it's ability to disperse small beads of sweat is a handy thing to have wrapped around a plastic cup when you slide down the road at 70mph.

Does it have any medicinal properties or other strings to it's bow at all Wink

Erm, I don't know if you noticed, but the one in the picture has 'HRC' loggoed (is that a word?) on it.

Now this would traditionally add 10hp, but in this case it actually adds 10% to the braking force you can effectively use!

For me, the band is for looks - it continues the HRC trend through the bike (aiming for a Isle of Man TT RC45 rep - in miniature).

There's a number of theories - G's right, it's a mixture of keeping the brake fluid at a constant temperature and also (at racing levels) keeps the fluid in the resevoir in the event of a tankslapper, or it's something along the lines of being able to quickly fill the brake fluid without spillages (although brakes need to be bled, so not sure how this would work).

Doesn't matter, just adds to the appeal of my bike, and of course an imaginary 10bhp, as G stated Wink

Indie band guy uses it to stop his hands from being dripped on whilst playing his Axe!

If they have a performance gain on a bike then why don't they build them in on new bikes! Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

They don't build HRC CDIs on road-going CBR6RRs, same applies to the HRC sweatband. (sure there's 'Not For Road Use' sewn on the other side Wink )

My brake thingy's rectangular. Sad

Does this mean I will miss out on all these perfomance upgrades, as the sweat band would simply ping off?

There would be the advantage of it stoping fluid ending up allover the place (ALLWAYS end up with some creeping down the side) but then a rag works just as well..

Absolutely spot on!

In my experience certain master cylinders on certain bikes are notorious for leaking. My mates Aprilia RSV MilleR had a loads of problems with his leaking and the sweat band was the cheapest solution.
