It's not really worth upgrading a comp of that spec... just go for a whole new one, maybe keeping the monitor, keyboard, case etc.

www.ebuyer.co.uk are usually at least as cheap if not cheaper than others.

If you live in London then head up to Tottenham Court Road as there are a couple of computer fairs that are on in some of the UCL buildings every Saturday (or maybe Sunday - it's been a while). They cost a quid or so to get in and they have loads of stuff for fairly decent prices.

But I agree that it's probably not worth upgrading something with those specs. Use it as a home server or mail gateway.

Hi

At that spec it is probably an AT case. Basically there isn't much there that would be worth keeping (floppy drive basically). I paid £300 for an AMD 2600 machine with a CD writer, DVD drive, 512mb of memory, 80gb hd, floppy drive, etc from a computer fair

All the best

Keith

With a machine that old, I'm replace the entire system. Of course the problem is expense so I agree he's probably best keeping your keyboard and especially his monitor, as monitors are a big part of the expence of computer systems.

you can't really upgrade a p2 much further than it is now. The bios on the mother board probably wont suport drives above 8gb. and It will either be pc66 memory or EDO ram which is not easy to get hold of new and is hardly worth bothering with.
For a few hundred squid you could just build a new PC that is much better.

well he catn afford that few hundred squid, so i think the best think to do would be buy a cd/dvd writer and just put the stuff he downloads onto cd/dvd disc what you think?

My pentium 2 233mhz will take a twenty gig hard drive, and hopefuly i'll upgrade it to a 30 gig when i've bought my bike. I think i'd proberly agree with the other that it's proberly going to be better just to replae the whole thing, althought if he doesn't know much about computers i sieriously would not suggest going to a computer fair, people who don't know that much are the one's that get ripped off.

you'll be lucky if a 30gb goes in a p2 233, but good luck to you, its all down to the age of the bios. as for CDRW drives. a p200 is about minimum spec for them so it would be just about ok. but I wouldn't recomend a DVDRW as it wont work very well in a P2, plus it will be worth more than your PC Mr. Green
