I've a Mk2 TDM850 that I've fettled a bit and I've been really impressed with.

I like getting out for weekend rides, but not as often as I'd like and it is mostly used as a commuter (taking in all kinds of roads) ~3days/week.

It's still a good bike, but I'm interested in the options for something a bit newer (or with less mileage).

I like a comfortable bike that can cope with bumps and twisties. Power isn't too important, but something with a bit more oomph than the TDM wouldn't be a bad thing. A grunty 100bhp would be good., but not essential.

Ideally I'd have a commuter and a more fun bike, but it's not practical.

A TDM900 is the obvious choice, although a Versys with more grunt would be ideal.

Budget ~£2.5K

Ideas:
Bandit 1200
Old Multistrada

Any other suggestions?

ST3. 100bhp 3valve Twin. Think they did a ST3s version with uprated suspension..possibly ABS. CBA to verify.
Overlooked bike due to the dominance of Honda/BMW and old thoughts of reliabilty issues. Plenty of them cracked 100,000K. Clutch is wet.(on +2005 models)
Lot of bike for the money.

I'd recommend a late ST2, you'd love its handling, but not enough power maybe.

Ducati may be good, but I'm not sure that I want to take the risk for a commuter, so that would scrap the idea of a Multistrada too.

I'll have a look at what's available though.

Versys.

I went down from a Speed Triple to a Versys and loved it.
Fantastic bike that is overlooked far too often.

A good Tiger 955i should be well within you budget. I had one for a short while. One of the most comfortable bikes I've ever ridden.

What about a Fazer Thou? I'm doing the usual thing of recommending my own bike but with some decent suspension they can surprise many a sports bike.

Cheers

I'm struggling for fettling time at the minute, and with my sensible head on, I'm not sure how good it would be as a commuter and I'd be worried about leaving a KTM anywhere.

The Tiger 955, rightly or wrongly, doesn't appeal at all.

Approaching from a different angle, any ideas for something with less engine, but more agile?

Budget again, ~2.5K

I have a TDM900, Great bikes, The 955 is a brilliant engine and I have never ridden tiger. The Versys is down on power and I wouldn't be interested in one, the other similar bikes are the Varadero1100 and the DL1000 I'd rather have the TDM.

In My opinion aswel,

Africa Twins are expensive for what you get
KTMs and Ducati's are too unreliable and BMWs are just meh.

I know that the TDM is the sensible choice, but I'd like something a bit different.

I've ended up going for a late (2003), low mileage FZS Fazer 600. I decided that the 1000 was excessive, although it's a possibility for my next bike if I don't get a KTM SM.

On the test ride the handling felt nice and nimble. The engine was nice and smooth. The power came in higher up than the grunty TDM and it seemed to accelerate and brake well.
