Need to get my front wheel off to get at the speedo drive, I don't have access to a garage or a front stand. Any ideas for getting the wheel off at the side of the road without throwing the bike on the floor!?

beg borrow or steal one car axle stand.

Put bike on side stand.

Stand on opposite side to sidestand and using all your manly strength push the bike over so that it is on only the front wheel and sidestand (rear wheel in the air).

With one of your feet, slide the axle stand so that the cup is under the footrest hanger (not the bit that folds, the bit it's bolted on to).

The bike is now sitting so if you wanted to you can remove the back wheel. However, if you want to remove the front wheel, push the bike so the back wheel touches the ground and wedge something under the frame at the front.

You might need to experiment with different heights on the axlestand and your bike may have better locations to wedge it, try it and see, it works on most bikes.

Have used bricks and wood before, either under the forks or wedged under the frame or somewhere.

Better to have two of you there though just in case it literally takes a nose dive, even with two of us we ended up with a bike resting on its forks on the floor before, luckily because there was two of us we could put it down gently.

Bodge stands FTW!

Does it have a centre stand?

If it does, get someone to push the back down and get the front in the air then either strap tonnes of stuff to the rear seat, place a car jack under the downpipes or place axle stands under the fork legs to keep it that way.

If not, then you need to pikey it like above, have as many mates around you as possible - bikes can be heavy Thumbs Up .

Do you have a car? Put a car jack under the downpipes. Or if you can get 2 jacks put a bit of wood under the engine/downpipes and use a jack on each side for a more stable list.

I use a trolley jack. There's usually some bit of the frame you can find at the front which you can use to just take the weight off of the front wheel.

Either use blocks or get someone to sit on the back.
I did this on my uncles cb900, i was there for quite a while but it worked.
Just gotta make sure they dont move Laughing

Put it on the side stand and put a car jack under the front right of the engine. It's completely stable as it forms a tripod.

well it looks like the car jack and some wood is going to be best bet, no center stand so i'll just have to take it somewhere flatish not too far away as I don't want to carry tools/car jack etc too far and once again will amuse the good people of west hampstead with my roadside mechanics Thumbs Up
