Good evening. Hope this post is in the correct section.

My old Honda Magna is going for an MOT tomorrow and I am hoping that it will pass despite having a rotten exhaust collector.

I have plugged up the numerous holes with exhaust repair putty and as far as I can tell by sense of touch the leaks have been cured, but I was curious to know the lengths that an MOT tester is required to go to to detect leaks and tecniques they use, and whether any leak will fail the MOT, or if minor leaks are acceptable just in case I have missed any in inaccessible parts of the collector.

Cheers
Daniel.

Its one of those ones that depends on the place where it is being tested.

My bike that I bought had just passed an MOT and there were holes all over the place in the exhaust.

Someone abit more clued up will be able to tel you the 'correct' answer!

The exhaust only has to function as a muffler.
As said, most places would pass it but some might be picky and give a fail.

As long as it is secure and doesn't present a danger/nuisance then it should be OK. Gun Gum is permitted so long as it is sound.

Bike MOTs are a nonsense anyway if a bike fails an MOT then it really shouldn't be on the road for everyone's sake. Smile

This is interesting.

Hate to hijack a bit, but my CG has about 8 or 9 holes (not including the one that's supposed to be there) on it's downpipe.

Does this mean I can plug them using gun gum and be able to pass an MoT, for less of my hard earned monies than replacing my exhaust (which I thought I was going to have to do)?

BCF pleases me once more.

Cheers
Steve.

A durable repair to an exhaust system which effectively prevents leaks is acceptable providing the system is structurally sound.

So if I tap around on my exhaust and make sure the rest of it is structurally okay (it's surface rusted to fooook), a bit of GunGum should do the trick?

Also, a quiet little commuter bike should be less likely to fail on exhaust holes than something a bit bigger/louder? As reading the link you provided, it seems to only be an issue if the hole makes the bike louder?

Cheers

Steve.

I used Gun Gum on the holes in previous years but found the repairs didn't last very long - I'd be patching up the same (slightly larger) holes a few months later. This time I tried Hylomar ERP2 - found it easier to apply than Gun Gum. Time will tell if the repairs last as long.

By the way - it passed the MOT yesterday with no comments about the exhaust!

I used gumgum paste but repairs didn't last very long. I apply it every other month. Still cheaper than a brand new exhaust.

Exhaust repairs i have done in the past -

1. Cut middle section out of any popular fizzy drinks can (500ml lager can for larger repairs Laughing)

2. Smear inside of said can liberally in your chosen exhaust repair paste.

3. Wrap gooey can around damaged section of pipe.

4. Secure with jubilee clips/exhaust clamps.

5. Drink beer as paste sets and observe the win.
