Hi everyone,

I'm pretty sure stinkwheel can help me with this Wink

I'm doing a full 16,000 mile service on my bike a CB 500 as cheap and well as possible using haynes and some previous little experience . The only thing I have at the moment is most common workshop tools, a waterjet and ACF 50.

I understand however that I need new oil filters, oil, anti-freeze for the cooling system and more.

Where would be the best and cheapest place to buy these off or online? What is nice to have and not need to have and what is essential? I understand engine oil can lubricate the chain for example, can ACF 50 lubricate the chain!? Any help much appreciated.

My last question is this, the bike is perfect apart from the engine that has some wear on it, is there anyway that I can cosmetically bring it back to pristine condition? Without doing major expensive outsourcing such as powdercoating. Please see the photo below.

It depends on your point of view on using car oils Twisted Evil You could go down to Morrisons and buy 5 litres of their engine oil for the same as some chicken fillets and many people on here have without any issues, myself included. As long as you use the correct spec and viscosity for your bike then brand is largely irrelevant.

I used Catrol ActEvo 10w40 in mine this year largely because it was on sale super cheap and i bought 2 years supply!! You could try Opie Oils, Ebay, Wemoto etc for filters, plugs, oil and coolant.

Engine oil is fine for chain lube just don't put too much on the chain however I bought some Wurth chain lube (again sale cheap) which is really good stuff.

It looks like you've got some light oxidation on the engine, you could try giving it a good spray of ACF 50 which may remove it or if not will protect it and to be honest it doesn't look too bad Thumbs Up

Hi

Depends how much you want of anything.

For oil I use a local oil distributor and buy 25L drums (of car oil) for use in most of the bikes and cars. Works out cheap for a decent quality oil, but expensive compared to the amount needed for a single oil change at Halfords prices.

Mail order (such as Wemoto) does work out to be pretty cheap, but you need to factor in the delay and postage cost. Probably not an issue if you are ordering in advance filters, plugs, etc. Especially if you are ordering for a few oil changes.

Oil filters I tend to buy half a dozen at a time at bike shows, so I have plenty spare when needed.

Other generic things that you might need (ie, brake cleaner, copper grease, brake fluid, general grease, penetrating oil, WD40, generic bulbs, etc) I would suggest just using your local motor factors. Someone like Partco.

Oh, just thought. I do often use old engine oil to lube the chain (or occasionally on a toothbrush to clean the chain up). It does have a few advantages, being essentially free and also flushing off dirt and debris. Down side compared to proper chain lube is that it tends to get everywhere and make the back wheel very dirty (on the plus point it is far easier to get off the wheel than the remains of chain lube). For how long it lasts between applications chain lube is almost certainly better than used oil, but for me that is something I am happy to put up with.

All the best

Keith

Opie Oils is what I use. Found them on google but you also see him on here.

You get members discount, and sometimes better offers. Phone him up and ask for deals because last time I got free delivery.

Cheap and fast

FWIW keep an eye out for Hein Gericke offers.
They had a deal (in June - click here) where you buy 5l oil for £20 and get oil filter free.

Used to be the offer was on all the time and IIRC had air filter in there as well. Sadly doesn't now appear to be the case.

I'll be stocking up when it comes around again Thumbs Up

I often use official fleabay shops for smaller parts and components, and locally M & P for oils or heavier items if I have the chance to visit their shop.

...and my local bike garage PeeGee's for MOT or garage work that's too much to handle myself.

Very occasionally I'll use Hein Gericke, although outside one of their offers, they tend to be on the expensive side locally.

and dealerships are absolutely a last resort

As for tools, most of mine are coming from Machine Mart or Screwfix lately, although I also go to B&Q if I'm in a hurry and already know if they're likely to have what I need
My last resort for tools would probably be Halfrauds

That said if you get the offers for their professional kit then they become affordable. Just keep your receipt(s) in a safe place in case they do break.

Thumbs Up

The quality of their Professional kit isn't a problem, my main problem is the clueless numptys that work at the local branch
